After having lived with win10 for a month now, today I get the rude awakening. I was away for several days and booted up my pc this morning. I knew things weren't right when my screensaver was gone, replaced by the original one from the pc manufacturer. Upon further digging, I uncovered that each and every setting in the os and every single application was gone.
For example, when I opened outlook, it looked like the first time it was being opened. It had no email accounts set up. Same with lightroom, it was asking for the serial number and to set up a new catalog. Every setting is gone after four years of having everything run as I would like. I tried restoring to a point prior to the update but it failed.
If I could get things restored to before the update I'd probably be fine, but I don't see any way to do that. I think I am past the thirty days of rolling back to win7, because when I go to settings-restore, I don't see a roll back option.

Windows 10 updated itself two days ago. Since then, there are no icons on the task bar. Moving the mouse over the task bar produces gray squares where the icons should be. There are six squares for the six programs I normally access there. Right-clicking on a gray square provides access to the program. But the icon is not visible. Also, clicking on the Settings produces no result whatsoever. Right clicking allows pinning to start or task bar, neither of which happens. And, the time/date from the lower right corner is missing. Double clicking on the missing spot raises up a calendar with the time.

I tried to change the windows update settings and I can't! I get a message saying that some settings are managed by my system administrator! I am the only user in this laptop with administrator privileges.
How comes that I can't change the settings?

I do not want Windows 10 to update and restart my PC automatically - I want to decide when that is done.
In the Settings it is fixed at 'Automatic' update.
I have followed two suggestions to alter the setting that searches turned up, but neither have worked so far.
NOTE:
Here are the 2 Methods I tried.

Everything went well on the Win10 installation, but the only problem is that when I go to access the settings tab in the start menu, it just flashes briefly like it tries to open the settings window, and then disappears, so I can't access anything in the settings. No update checking, just nothing. Everything else seems to work... I can also access the system info window and it shows Windows 10 to be activated.
Edit: I can get to the control panel, and I can see Windows Update, but I get this error message when I try to click on it:
The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail.

I have windows 10 pro and I have edited the group policy for windows update and has set it to notify me to download. My problem is that after a few days windows automatically download updates and install them though I had set it to notify to download. It seems that the settings are not permanent and windows resets the group policy settings. How can i make the settings permanent?

I was more than disappointed to find after downloading this major update for Windows 10, that the Mouse settings have still not been addressed. Apparently, this is one of those flaws that will go on and on.
I am using an ASUS Rupublic of Games Laptop with an ELAN Input Device and a Logitech MX Revolution mouse with the latest updated software for that.

First of all I'll make a complaint. I am very disappointed with Windows 10. It's been one of the worst Windows ever made and sooner or later I will switch from Windows to some normal OS sofware. I have been let down too many times by it (not just 10 but all of the former as well) and I decided it's simply not worth my time, money and nerves.
Today Windows decided to do an upgrade on my computer and when I turned it on it said it was preparing something. After the welcome screen, I realized all my documents on the desktop have been missing, including majority of the shortcuts.
All the settings have been reverted, including theme, desktop image, default programs. In short, there's not much left untouched.
What's utterly intolerable it somehow deleted ALL my personal documents, pictures, literally EVERYTHING is lost. I just can't put up with it anymore. There were several files I need for my work, everything is simply gone.

A cumulative update came through and didn't install correctly. The Settings app Update history keeps saying it needs a restart to install correctly.
Reinstalled, no change. I uninstalled the update and Windows Update reapplied it successfully. Now the Update history says two entries for the same update, one that it installed successfully and the previous one is still there saying it needs a restart to finish installing.
Any way to clean up the reporting of the app?

So I have an HP Envy laptop. Recently web browsing has intermittently become painfully slow on both Edge and Chrome (e.g. loading this website hung for a few minutes) and I have many timeouts on websites. This appears to be the case even when I use different Wifi networks. I do not have this problem with my desktop which shares the network.
I was wondering in Windows was in the middle of some update, but when I click on Settings -> Update & Security Settings, the control panel window simply loads a white field on the right and the words: Windows Update, Windows Defender, Backup, Recovery, Activation, Find My Device, and For Developers. I can click on nothing. The control panel often freezes (e.g. if I click on a web browser I cannot click back on its icon, but can see it if I minimize all other applications) and eventually auto-closes. When I search for Advanced Windows Update settings, I get a light blue screen with the control panel icon in the center which promptly auto-closes. I can access all other control panel options, just not anything below Update & Security.
I downloaded Microsoft Security Scanner and ran than across the entire system; no threats were found. I currently am running Windows Defender which last updated itself this early this morning.
I am using Windows 10 version 1511 OS build 10586.104.
I used to be a knowledgeable Windows user, but stop keeping current a couple of versions back. Does this sound like anything familiar or previously seen?

Daily is the name given to the new replacement for Mozilla Thunderbird. It often has daily updates, and the one today (08 Jan 2016) causes it to lose all email settings. As a result, when it start is shows no existing email, no email account, and looks like you are starting with a fresh install of a new email client.
To get around this I downloaded and installed the latest version of Thunderbird (38.5.1) and this did show all my email OK. So something bad happened to Daily - hopefully whoever it is who controls that software will fix it tomorrow.

To better suit my monitor, I want to run my Windows 10 in 110% scaling mode, just like I did with Windows 7. When I adjust scaling to 110% everything does indeed look right (i.e. very similar to Windows 7).
However, there's an obvious issue with notification area icons: if there are more than one icon present in the notification area, one of the icons always "disappears". More precisely, the rightmost icon becomes invisible: Windows apparently simply thinks that it does not fit into the constraints of the notification area and decides not to draw it.
Here's some pictures of what happens in 110% scaling mode. This is the original configuration, when all icons are residing in the the pop-up "drawer" and only the Volume Control icon is present in the notification area. Everything looks fine
Now let's say I drag Skype icon from the popup drawer down into the notification area and drop it to the left of the Volume Control icon
As can be seen in the above picture, the Volume Control icon suddenly disappears. Technically it is there, but Windows fails to display it since it assumes (apparently) that the icon "does not fit" into the allotted space.
Now, If I return Skype back into the drawer everything will get back to normal - the Volume Control icon will reappear. If after that I, again, drag Skype icon from the popup drawer into the notification area, but this time drop it to the right of the Volume Control icon, the Skype icon will disappear.
So, the question I have is: is there any workaround for this problem? Is it somehow possible to manually increase the size (the width) of the notification area to make it display all icons?

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 and have encountered an interesting problem. I realized it initially when I would press start and begin to type a program's name in order to run it, as I was doing with Windows 7, but it would not find any results and would prompt me to Google the program. I found it strange but didn't think much of it.
Once I started looking into the issue, I noticed when I go to Indexing Options it says "Indexing is not running." When trying to rebuild indexing, it gives the message about how it will take a while, and then does nothing. So I decided to look into Windows Search.
Windows Search is not and will not run. First: If I go to services.msc and try to start the Windows Search service, it tells me that "The Windows Search service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs."
So I tried through an elevated cmd prompt: "net start wsearch" gives me error 15:
"C:WINDOWSsystem32>net start wsearch
The Windows Search service is starting..
The Windows Search service could not be started.
A system error has occurred.
System error 15 has occurred.
The system cannot find the drive specified."
Finally, and perhaps the strangest thing, one post told me to go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows Search SetupCompletedSuccessfully and change the value to 0. However, the only thing in the registry under Windows Search is a Preferences folder. There are no keys there. So to me it looks as though Windows Search does not currently exist on my computer.
So of course I run sfc /scannow. Unfortunately, it tells me:
C:WINDOWSsystem32>sfc /scannow
Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.
Beginning verification phase of system scan. Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windirLogsCBSCBS.log. For example C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log. Note that logging is currently not supported in offline servicing scenarios.

I have an HP spectre laptop with a 2560 x 1440 display on a 13" screen. Needless to say on the default settings, all the text is very very small.
So. under Windows 8.1, I was able to enlarge everything to 150% and then adjust the menu bars and other text to suit my eyes.
I then upgraded to Windows 10. And the ability to adjust the menu bars is now greyed out.
What do I have to do to re-enable it?

So, I upgraded to Windows 10 last month, but I've just noticed this minor but somewhat annoying issue with the File Explorer. It isn't immediately noticeable as the Ribbon largely supplanted it, but on certain Explorer windows such as in the legacy Control Panel, I end up with this:
Tried uninstalling my custom themes and other hacks to no avail, and now I'm at a loss at this. As what I've said before, this is a minor, non-crticial issue, but still it irks me for a bit.

All modern apps have their icons broken in one way or the other.
For example, taskbar icons, left to right: Store, Mail, Calendar, Maps, Alarms
Or when I search in start menu:
Store
Maps
Mail
The icons display properly in All apps and when pinned as tiles.

Yesterday I used the "Get Windows 10" option on my Windows 8.1 HP Envy-15 laptop. The process seemed to work fine and I managed to login and use the new OS fine. However, I decided that while I was installing a new OS that I might aswell clean the system back to the Windows 10 factory settings. To do so I used the Windows 10 reset option within settings. It didn't seem to be finished when I went to bed so I left it on overnight (for a grand total of around 15 hours of reset), but when I awoke it was still at the 30% I left it at it.
I decided to reboot it and this went into a Windows 10 screen which I promptly hit the "Exit and retun to Windows" on, however this did not work and now whenever I boot the system it shows the HP logo, then a black screen then back to the HP logo in a loop.
I've created a Windows 10 USB and tried to run that on the laptop but I can't seem to get into the BIOS settings either after trying the usual ESC, F12, F8.
Cleaning the keyboard whilst the computer was in the loop bought the BIOS up for a second and then it disappeared again and I can't seem to get it back as I do not know what buttons I pressed.
