View 16 RepliesI have both desktop and laptop set up on 10. The desktop has "Search the web and Windows" on the task bar. It's not on the laptop. How do I get it.
View 2 RepliesSo, as soon as I had installed Windows 10 and saw what I presumed was a redundant search icon in the taskbar I deleted it. I assumed search would be in the start menu, but it isn't. Now I have no search icon anywhere. Is there a way to get it back?
View 8 RepliesWhen I first used the search icon in the tool bar, it asked me for my name. I typed it in but the keyboard was slow and it missed the last letter of my name. How can I correct that - can't seem to find anything that remotely leads me to that. Second when I click to open it, EVERY single time it asks me for my Microsoft Account, and I dutifully sign in - but every time?
View 7 RepliesI don't use cortana, and I was expecting the search bar in start to function like Windows 7. I don't understand the point of the search bar, all it seems to be able to do is show apps and search the web. Even the list "all apps" in start seems to be a random selection of programs that are actually installed.
Steam has a shortcut on the desktop and takes up most of my HDD, but when i type "steam" into the search bar it couln't find anything. Why can't it search files/folders/programs?I know it's easy to use windows explorer, but it's frustrating having a nicely layed out search bar on the desktop that can't search properly.
I have 4 laptops and 1 tablet eligible for Windows 10 upgrade and I upgraded them all.
On one system (Windows 10 Home, upgraded from a Windows 8.1 Home laptop I bought 6 months ago), Search in "Settings" never returned anything, I always got "No results for ...". For example, when I searched for "update", it showed:
On my other 4 systems, they correctly found some items:
At first I thought Windows 10 might have been building index for search, but 4 days after I upgraded to Windows 10 (and I use this computer everyday) it still does not work.
search box a.k.a cortana isn't working. I tried the method with task manager to end the process but it isn't working. how can i make this work?
View 4 RepliesI have the "Search the web and Windows" bar in my taskbar but I can't type anything into it. If I go to "File Explorer" in the start panel, I can search for files.
This worked in the past and I don't know what might have happened to make it stop working.
esterday I had my Tablet PC (Windows 8.1) returned after the upgrade by a technician. I have encountered some issues, some fairly minor, others more significant ---- especially Cortana and Search not working:
1. Cortana does not work. She is said to be unavailable because of the language and region that has been selected. The language is English USA (needed for the keyboard) and the region is UK / GB, surely neither of which should be causing any problems?
2. Search does not work. It generates the error 'class not registered'. I have encountered this error before, so from searching in the past I have seen that this can be caused by a number of different factors, hence it is hard to identify what to do.
I will work on the other issues after these two have been resolved.
I have visited the How To site and found that my situation is commonplace, complicated and worldwide. There are many in a similar situation in the UK. On the one hand it is comforting to know that I am not alone and others have resolved the problems --- eventually. However, on the other hand I note that many of the postings date from July, and feel it should not still be continuing to happen now.
If I have understood it, the problems revolve around getting the settings for region / display language / speech language configured in a mutually compatible way.
I am trying to disable the text popup that is shown when you hover over the search icon on the task bar. This is affecting me actually using the search function. When I am about to click the icon this text "Search the web and windows" pops up and makes it so you cannot click the search.
View 2 RepliesI can no longer use Search/Cortana as the Windows icon or Windows key are unresponsive and there is no way to open Search the web and Windows. Also, can no longer open Action Center.
Everything was working fine after upgrade from Windows 7 for awhile, then the above happened. (except for Action Center). After a clean install, things went well for awhile, and then started having the same problems again.
windows 10 my search bar and start button on keyboard and screen does not work.
View 8 RepliesI have a few portable apps, which I have pinned to start.
Now I need to show these apps to show when I type their names in search, but it just doesn't show any of these apps. Search for properly installed apps works flawlessly same as for system settings.
How can I pin portable apps to be able to be shown up in search results? Or am I doing anything wrong?
Not sure if it's just my pc, but type to seach on the start menu fails to work when returning to start menu after clicking "all apps" ...
There are numerous times when i click the 'all apps' button out of habit, realise i don't wanna scroll through an entire list, and click the 'back' button to return to the start menu, which then causes the type to search function to fail to work, forcing me to either click on cortana, or to exit & reenter the start menu to get it working again.
I just got this problem when i woke up this morning. The but is that Cortana, action center and most of the toolbar don't work. Ive tried to use the windows key but that did not work. Ive looked around and have tried a few ways to fix it but none have worked. I am worried if I will have to revert again. Last time I went back to windows 7 it crashed and I had no O.S and i had to go find the disk and had to reinstall.

View 11 RepliesI have several computers, one laptop recently has a new problem. The internet network connection in the corner has a tiny yellow triangle and says the connection is limited and says it is NOT connected to the internet - even though it IS connected to the internet. It does this for both the wireless icon and the ethernet icon, so it can't be a driver issue.
I have rolled back the drivers, gone to the HP support site to get their drivers, updated to the latest drivers, and nothing gets rid of those triangles.
It's also not a router issue, because I have another computer on the same router with no problem on either the wifi or ethernet. I've done sfc /scannow in both safe mode and normal mode. I've looked for any errors and there are none. It is very annoying.
My Windows 10 is in Turkish so some folder descriptions my differ from the English one! I'm using a folder in D (Windows 10 installed on C) named as Downloads to secure my downloaded files incase of a format or etc and changed the location of the Windows Downloads folder by simply right clicking the folder and choosing the Properties > Location in C:User[my username]
But in the start menu (which i enabled the view of Downloads folder from Control Panel>Personalizations>Start>Choose which folders ll be shown>Downloads "ON") when i click on Downloads it says "This shorcut doesnt work............... Do you want to delete the shortcut?"
How can i correct this error?
A few days ago, after an automatic Windows 10 update on my desktop computer, I found that: right clicking icons on the taskbar does nothing - none of the options appear; the start button on the left of the taskbar only works by right-clicking and accessing the old Windows 8 style options; the search icon on the taskbar does nothing; the Windows 10 calculator has disappeared - when I press the calculator key on my keyboard a message appears saying "You'll need a new app to open this calculator". It seems to have been deleted from the computer.
Until these things happened Windows 10 was working well.
When I open up the start menu it shows "We are getting search ready" forever. Worked until when I started my computer up today. I have attached a screenshot of this.
View 4 RepliesWin 10 Enterprise. Worked fine for a couple of days, but now I cannot seem to bring up the start menu and start typing anything. It will not search. I also tried in the search box or spyglass... I just click on it and nothing happens. It is a major inconvenience. I don't want to do a restore and keep my files, because there is a HUGE list of applications I will then need to restore. I also tried to click on Cortana, but clicking the app does nothing, doesn't even bring it up.
I tried re-indexing search items, I tried the search troubleshooter. I have rebooted, I have installed all updates. Someone on another forum said kill the Cortana task... well there isn't one running.
After a driver (I think one related to Intel graphics, but i am not shure) was unsuccesfully installed, I had a BSOD problem, hard restart, kernel error message (unable to reproduce it afterward). Some applications from taskbar partially work (Office, Skype), some not. I am unable to open the Start menu (but the right click still works). The Edge disapeared, I post from anothe PC. Restarted a few times, tried to restore to a previous backup of drivers - nothing works.
View 1 RepliesCurrently, my OneDrive icon is sitting in the 'hidden icons' section. I have seen pictures of the icon sitting on the taskbar next to Edge, the store, and all the other taskbar icons... how do you get that icon on the taskbar? I have tried all the normal ways I can think of (click and drag onto taskbar, going into taskbar settings, etc) but I can't get it to be removed from the hidden icons area.
View 2 RepliesI Just bought a new XPS 13 (lowest end model) that came with Microsoft 10 pre-installed (bought it from Microsoft store). my problem is that I cannot search for settings in the main search bar or even the settings search bar, the settings search bar simply doesn't work at all, and to double check that this wasn't a windows 10 issue I tried it out on a friend's Laptop and it worked fine. I took screenshots of both my Laptop and my friend's.
My Laptop:
searching for "add or remove" brings up nothing, even in the settings search
My friend's Laptop:
as you can see it works fine on my friend's laptop bringing up the settings i was searching for
Sometimes when I boot my PC I cannot search in the Search Bar, I have to restart the system then it usually works fine again until the next reboot.I have decided to rebuild the index to just the things I use regularly (I know how to navigate through the system so I don't usually need to search for much, it's purely ease).
These are the things which have been excluded: $SysReset; AMD; Fraps; history; inetpub; Intel; MSOCache; NPE; Perflogs; Program Files (x64); Program Files; ProgramData; Appdata; Appdata; WindowsIt has currently (after 1 hour) indexed 4,000 items. Do any of these things need to be indexed, Program Files for example? If they do not need to be then I probably will exclude them.
It is not there when I click on the Start Button, even if I enlarge the resultant display vertically. I see, for example a Most Used list, then a few other entries which end at "All Apps," with no search box below that.
