if it is possible to change a open with option back to unknown application on some files. i accidentally clicked open with the picture opener and its stuck on it now. how can i revert this?

View 7 RepliesI've been running Windows 10 since last August, after upgrading from Win 8.1 on my Asus laptop.
I use the taskbar (launchbar?) to start my favourite programs, such as Excel, and some 8-10 files are stacked on the icon so I can right-click the icon and select/open my desired file.
That was until approximately 10 days ago, when clicking on a file name only opened Excel, and I have to do a file/open within Excel to get the file I want open. Other programs that are also on the bar e.g. my PDF program, still opens the file name I click on.
I have just started using windows 10 on a new PC. I have tried to download an anti virus program. It downloads and installs (well it appears to) but the program is not there when finished. Not in the programs lists or on 'remove programs' either. I cant find any way of searching the PC like I did in XP or Vista 'search for all files and folders'. Is this option still there hidden away to make things more difficult?

I have windows 10 and somehow mobi files are opening with notepad. Of course they do not read in there but I have a free ebook site in which I want to know if they too have to open with notepad. I managed to repair the extension but not the icon. Can that be done? Also it really annoys me that it appears on the default menu and matched up to notepad there and that also cannot be changed . Is there a registry tweak I can apply to get it back to the way it was?
View 6 RepliesI downloaded a .lua file and it asked me what do i want it to open with. I exited out and it still made all my .lua files a photoshop file. I have tried alot from setting default to trying to revert my pc 2 day backs still nothing. I know the default program is suppose to be called "Unknown application" but cant get it back. View 3 RepliesI've received 5 files from 5 sources, both Excel and Word. Every time I try to open one I get an error message "File is corrupt and can't be opened." I can work on my own files, but not downloads.
I tried the Windows 10 "workarounds" but these didn't work. I've tried to download using both Firefox and Edge, no difference.
After downloading the Windows 10 file (which took over 5 hours) the file would not install. I will try to do a download again and see what kind of error message we are getting.
View 2 RepliesI uninstalled the update that added the Windows 10 app to windows 7 because it never showed up in the first place. Now Windows update can't find the file again to download. IS there any way I can get the download file back or am I stuck until they release another update?
View 1 RepliesI was recently e-mailed a PDF file from a friend and when I went to download it, it showed up like this. [URL] ....
When I tried to open it, it asked me what program I would like to use. I was able to open it up with adobe reader and I was able to view it in the e-mail that it was received in. However, when I tried attaching the file to an e-mail for a different recipient, I could no longer view it in the e-mail and it still downloaded the same way in the imgur link.
The only way I was able to fix this was I saved the pdf from the original e-mail to my google drive, then I downloaded it to my computer from my google drive, and it actually showed up as a pdf file.
My question is, why was I able to view it through the gmail pdf reader when I first received it, but when I downloaded it, it showed up with no extension?
I did a download of Windows 10 a while ago, but didn't update straight away. I now want to upgrade but I cannot find the file to do so.
I used to get notifications telling me to do the upgrade. The reminders really annoyed me as they kept popping up in the most inopportune times, so I turned off the reminders off according to the instructions for not getting the reminder.
What to do to the actual upgrade from Windows 7.1 to Windows 10.?
Downloaded files disappear in w10 home.They are not anywhere, not even in file history. Recuva revovery software does not show anything.

I've (install windows 10/clean install ) multiple times. after installing is done, every time i go change the ProgramFilesDir (x86). PC stops responding correctly.
Photo editing program. My criteria is a relatively easy to use program to add text, change colors or to make banners and posters for our club. Not interested in fancy makeovers. PSP and their help desk and manual is not that easy to use, and Gimp (have not used it much) seems like it would be too complex for my needs. Leaning towards Photoshop Elements because an acquaintance uses the full Photoshop (am told PS and the more limited PE use the same functions for what they can do) and may give me a few tips now and then. A friend also uses Elements. Some reviews recommended Lightroom over Elements.
View 1 RepliesI have my TV connected to HDMI and a small, old monitor connected to VGA on a Radeon 4600 video card. I have Kodi (multimedia player) set to open full screen when the default user account logs in and it does so on the main monitor which is my TV. I have the smaller, older monitor set up so I can still use the computer when someone is watching a movie on the TV. I have multi-monitor set to extend the desktop.
But my problem is when I open a program it wants to default to opening on the main monitor and when I open a program from the second monitor, it opens behind Kodi on the main monitor (and I have to click and drag it over to the second monitor) - so I would like to switch the old VGA monitor to be the main monitor and the TV to be the second.
Is there a way I can force Kodi to open and stay on the second monitor once I make my TV the second monitor?
I did an upgrade from 7, and then I went back and did a clean install of 10. Now two programs seem to open in negative space.
They arent opening off screen. i have tried setting display options from refresh to size and cascading windows to bring all open windows to the screen. Nothing.
However, when I Alt-Tab, the window is shown clearly. It shows an accurate preview of what is appearing on the screen, selecting it just does essentially nothing. This has led me to believe the windows are opening in limbo (negative space).
When I open anything in Windows 10 the program window is a bright blinding white. I tried the Settings and the color option in there but it didn't work, neither did adjusting the brightness. How do you change the color on the program windows?

View 4 RepliesI'm trying to copy a ripped movie file (iso) from my G drive to desktop. The file is 45GB. It gets to 99% then a message comes up saying the process can't complete because the System has the file open. I have nothing running and can't find anything where the System is accessing/linking to this file.
I thought it might be a permissions issue, so I wanted to download the Reg edit to add a "take ownership" command but the TenFourms link is not working. Take Ownership - Add to Context Menu in Windows 10 <<<< won't open web page.
I ran sfc /scannow and there are some errors reported that could not be fixed. There is a CBS.log file but I have not looked at it yet.
I also ran the DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth (I forget the full command line now) and it came back saying it could not find the files "online".
Whenever I plug a photo card in to my PC, the new Photo Viewer program is launched (which doesn't find the card but that doesn't matter as I don't want to use that program anyway). How can I change the default import program to one of my choice (Lightroom).
I can of course shut it down, load Lightroom and then select the card but I always have to go through the process of first shutting down the program that loads automatically. If anything is going to load automatically I would rather pick my own!
I just wonder why some of my apps are not listed there?! I also tried "apps and features" from settings and still some of my installed software don't show up there either!
Even tried with 3rd party uninstaller program (Revo) and still no trace of these installed software!
EX: Cubase, Photpshop, Premiere, etc
