After the recent (automatic) upgrade to windows 10 ( I have been running windows 10 for months), I can sign in to windows 10 but the desktop that appears with my sign in is something foreign and all my files, pictures and videos are NOT in any folders under Documents. So I thought I would go back to a restore point but am a bit afraid to since I cannot find a Restore file and I don't know how Microsoft and windows 10 works in this are or if my files are included in the automatic backup by the "system restore point" process. Then I thought I should, on my other windows 10 laptops, "create" a restore point from time to time as I feel is needed.

I installed windows 10 technical preview yesterday . I found a problem with system restore. It goes through everything normally but after it reboots I get an error. In the details it says:
System restore failed to extract the original copy of the directory from the restore point.
Source: %ProgramFiles%WindowsApps
Destination: Appxstaging
An unspecified error occurred during system restore. (0x80070057)

I was able to use Instant_Restore_Point under Win 8 (worked great), which I found here: [URL]
But I can't get it to run under Win 10, even after adding (in the appropriate place) these lines:
If instr(objOS.Caption, "Windows 10") Then
GetOS = "Windows 10"
And making the adjustment:If GetOS = "Windows 8" Or GetOS = "Windows 10" Then
How can I get this script to work?

New desktop computer - Windows 10 Home. In System Restore, Configure, the Max Usage slider is all the way to the left. What does that mean? The hard drive is 1 TB, so I'm not concerned about how much it uses.(On my old Windows 7 desktop, I moved the slider to the right and it now saves fewer restore points.)

Is there a way to get Restore Points created automatically periodically? The only ones showing in the Restore Point window are those I created manually. System Update has never created one.

I have restore point space limited to 2Gigs on my Tablet. I've noticed that when a new restore point is created at the top of the list, an old one is removed from the bottom of the list. Sooner or later, I will end up with totally new restore points. Is there a way to save one specific restore point, and not loose it? (without actually backing up (not an option on my Tablet) ).

I set tried to set up the mail app. I was not suscessful. Would not sync. No mail from Outlook. I read how to delete the mail app and reinstall it from the shop. I ran the program to do that and it work. It removed the Mal and calendar app.
When I tried to go to the shop app, and down load the current mail app, as instructed, the shop will only stay open 3 seconds and then it will close. I rebooted the computer several times, no avail.
My question is how do I restore my computer to just before I removed the mail app.

After restoring my computer back two days using System Restore, I noticed in PC Settings>Personalization>Start>Choose which folders appear on Start, that all the options are greyed out except "Settings". I was wondering if there was a way to fix this? I already tried SFC /Scannow and DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, but neither fixed the problem.

I upgraded from Win 7 to Win 10 this past week. All is well except for one thing. I received an update from Microsoft yesterday (Cumulative Update for Win 10 - KB3081424) and noted during the installation that no restore point was created. System Protection is ON and I am able to create restore points manually. Thus, this is only a minor annoyance since I can successfully create these points on my own. However, I would prefer for the system to do so when important updates from Microsoft come down. I guess it is possible that the update referenced above did not generate such a point but found that unusual since it is listed as a Cumulative Update.

I see that Win10 has deleted the function to schedule the creation of restore points! Supposedly it creates a new restore point before downloading updates (if the function is turned on; by default it is off!).
I like to schedule the creation of points every few days or each week to prevent viruses from corrupting things. This feature is so important; I can't believe they have hidden it, made it less functional, and turned it off by default!
Is there any way to run the creation button from the task scheduler or something to automatically schedule restore point creation?

When I manually try and make a restore point using the windows program it ends with a property page error.
It still does the restore point ok and seems to work all right if I need to use that point to restore.
No error notifications pop up using the System Restore Point shortcut tool or when system does a restore point when adding new programs or drivers.
So my best guess is the error is showing up because this page is open
Does it on two machines running Home 10586.14

I noticed a folder named" Windows.migrated" and I deleted in error thinking it wasn't necessary anymore. This was after i upgraded from windows 8 to 8.1 to 10. Unfortunately it caused ALL my store apps including the default ones to be deleted. I'm a bit lost of what to do now. I don't have a restore point to access.

Just bought a new Windows 10, Office 2016, Ultra HD Lenovo computer. Already having issues, surprise surprise! Not only are there scaling/blurry issues with some apps, but Windows Backup and Restore is displaying the following error:
The semaphore timeout period has expired.
I'm trying to backup to an external Seagate drive.
I've tried several fixes as I was previously having this issue too ([URL]), but nothing has worked.

If I make an acronis true image back up of her system now, then upgrade vidta to windows 7, then upgrade to windows 10, let it activate, then make another acronis true image backup.....then restore the vista backup.
will I then at some future date, possibly even after the ' free' windows 10 period expires, restore the windows 10 from the image I have ?
sounds bit complicated, but if I leave it too long the free windows 10 upgrade will end..

MediaID.bin
It has all my documents, photos, etc. from a PC that I converted to Win 10 and gave a family member. But I can't seem to get the file to open on my new Win 10 Pro laptop. Is there a program, command or process that will allow to restore all my files to this laptop?

I have a 500GB HDD divided into 3 partitions: The main one currently doesn't have an OS, the secondary one has Windows 10 64bits and the third one has Windows 7 64.
I want to carry(backup and then restore) the Windows 10 from the secondary partition over to the main one but without losing all the data on the main partition(movies, games, programs, etc.). How do I do that if possible?

I found out that since I replaced my motherboard, due to OEM, my win 10 license is no longer genuine.I contacted microsoft, and the guy told me to revert back to my old version of windows, which was 8.1. The problem, though, is that when I go to "Backup" under settings, it doesn't tell me that I can revert back to 8.1, but rather windows 7. The guy from Microsoft told me that he wouldn't revert himself, since he doesn't know what would happen.
I'm getting quite tired of not having the genuine windows 10, but I fear going back to 7, since I didn't own a genuine copy of that one too.So, should I try and revert, or is there another way for me to get back my genuine Win10 copy?

I recently and I might say reluctantly, upgraded to Windows 10. The upgrade went fine, however I'm not able to create a backup of the system image or folder files. I have a 320 GB WD Blue drive for the backup. There was always more than enough space to do this under Windows 7. After failing a number of times I deleted the drive completely and re formatted it. I now have no backup.

I have an unallocated 1Mb partition as the first partition (according to Easus) on my laptop drive, in addition to the recommended reserved, system and EFI partitions. Could this extraneous partition be the reason for my inability to restore from an image backup? (Restores fail after making my laptop unbootable)...

So I managed to break my partition table, but I was able to recover my entire C: drive and copy every file and folder to an external drive. My question now becomes, is there anyway to, when I reinstall Windows, to restore from that backup (since it's just a data backup of files and folders, not a system image)? Would booting into linux (so that partition isn't in use by Windows) and simply copy-past-overwriting the old files effectively give me my system back?
