View 1 RepliesI am upgrading a computer from Windows 7 to Windows 10. I completed the download, and got a message that the computer needed to restart to continue the installation. However, when I restart and the computer comes back up, the same message appears and the installation does not progress. When I go to check Windows updates in the control panel, it says it can't check for updates because another installation is in progress. I have restarted the machine multiple times with no progress - can't go forward, can't go back.
View 1 RepliesRecently I started having a problem where after my computer is on for awhile, nothing that operates in the Metro UI will open or function at all. This includes the Start menu, any Windows 10 apps including Settings, Task View, the alt-tab interface, etc. I also cannot log out or restart or shut down, I can get to the options from Ctrl+Alt+Del but it just gets stuck on logging out and I have to do a hard reset.
View 8 RepliesHave installed win 10, but cannot shut it down or restart it, whenever I try to do so I get error message: page fault in nonpaged area (applecharger.sys) error. My main problem is that the solutions that I have found do not work for me, as when I search through win 10 search function I get only web responses.
View 1 RepliesSo this morning, I turned on my PC to discover that my downloads folder is now completely empty (I had put a few folders and files in there and downloaded some programs, all gone now). Even shortcuts that I placed on the desktop have disappeared, and I had to re-sign in to Chrome and import all of my bookmarks again. Last night I had accidentally clicked on restart instead of shut down, as they are so close together. I don't know if this could have contributed to the issue. After waiting for it to come back on I shut it down.
I'm just wanting to know what could have caused this, and how to fix it if possible. Definitely don't want it to happen again, and not sure if it's a Windows 10 issue or a fault with my PC. Should mention that I only recently bought this computer and it came pre-installed with Windows 10.
Solved by restarting again...still somewhat worrying that something like that could happen though.
Sometimes when I power down or restart I get a sound that is usually used when there is a problem. I looked up the sound and its the standard "Critical Stop" sound. This only happens sometimes but even if it does occur the system still either shuts down or restarts properly.
View 6 RepliesSo I had a pretty big update for my Windows recently and since then whenever I restarted my pc it take like 10 on the restart screen and then the screen goes black so I just turn it off from the button because I'm impatient. And same thing happens when I shut it down, the screen goes off but the pc keeps running for lik it seems forever.
View 1 RepliesI click the windows10 icon and option comes; shut down. I press that one and I see stars going round the circle but computer doesn't shut down.
Overnight it remained same. Next morning, I had to shut down manually.
I have a laptop ASUS Zenbook UX303LN. I made a clean install to Windows 10 and now it doesn't shut down properly.
When I shut it down, the screen goes black, but the power light remains on and I have to shut it down manually. Also, I sometimes cannot restart it when it goes to sleep and I also have to shut it down manually. This doesn't happen everytime, but most of the time. I previously had Windows 8.1 and did not have this problem. Actually, I'm considering changing back.
The OS and drivers are all up to date.
I have research this issue and the most common fixes are: Uncheck the "Turn on fast startup (recommended)"Use a shortcut for "shutdown /s /t 5"
I've tried both and the problem remains.

I have 2 hard drives In windows 7 i made sure my second drive turned off after 5 minutes because it makes a lot of noise
energy savings options / advanced options / turn off hard disk after 5 minutes
why doesnt this work in windows 10 ? it keeps on going and its like windows 10 is using the second hard drive? is windows 10 spying on me ? There is no operating system installed on my second drive its just for backup.
I have a Mobile HP Workstation model: EliteBook 8540w with 8G RAM.
View 1 RepliesSometimes, when I shut down or restart Windows 10 64-bit, just before the screen turns black it makes the critical stop sound effect. It does not effect anything, the whole shut down process is like 3 seconds, which I really like in Win 10.
Nevertheless it bugs me a bit, I also had this sometimes in Win 7. I'm not running any programs while shutting down, it would notify me if I did.
If I press the shut down button my laptop goes to the "Shutting down" screen then the display turns black, but it doesn't shut down. My connected mouse's lights turn off but I still hear the CPU working, the fans spinning and the laptop light that shows that it's turned on is still on. This problem started happening since 2 days ago.
View 1 RepliesI just currently started having this issue. My computer runs completely fine. However I applied recent windows 10 upgrades and I for some reason had to restart I cant remember why. However after the initial restart the computer simply stayed on and didn't initiate boot. I then turned off the computer and turned it back on. It boots fine, no problems. However if I set the computer to restart from the start menu it will but it wont boot back. It will just stay on and make a louder fan noise but wont reboot?
View 7 RepliesOn my system, I have Automatically Restart set in the system failure but when it BSOD's, it says that the system will restart after the dump but it appears it just stays at the blue screen without restarting even after an hour on atleast 3 occasions since I've upgraded to Win10 from Win7 Home Premium on August 11, 2015, the system is able to restart and shutdown normally.
View 9 RepliesThe generic PnP monitor driver in the device manager keeps reenabling/reinstalling itself whenever I restart Windows 10 on my early 2011 MBP (Boot Camp). I want to leave it disabled so the brightness controls on the keyboard work, otherwise they don't.
I do not want to disable automatic driver update checking by Windows 10. I know that if I turn off automatic driver installation via device installation settings and enabling "Prevent installation of other devices not described by other policy settings" will keep the "Generic PnP Monitor" driver uninstalled, and this is certainly one solution that works, but disabling these features interferes with the installation of other devices (one example is the TAP driver for the Private Internet Access Windows client).
There is no available apple display driver I can install over the generic driver that I have found, but the brightness controls work perfectly when the Generic PnP driver is disabled/uninstalled. I just wish it'd stay that way after a restart.
I upgraded to Windows 10 everything seems to run fine but system will not restart from the restart selection on the start menu. Windows update will not reboot automatically either. System looks like it is going to reboot, everything shuts down but as system trys to restart everything freezes. Only way around it is to do a hard shutdown by holding the power button. Updated graphics card, hard drive and bios but still no luck.

Had problems with Firefox. Tried to download to replace existing Firefox. CNET site appeared to be correct but something seemed wrong so I killed the download. But.
- The windows start menu doesn't come up when I click on the icon, but if I right-click, a text menu does appear and lets me, for example, shut down.
.- If I click on the Windows End icon in the task bar, the screen flashes but End does not come up. Ditto for the Windows Store icon.
- Somewhere SpyBot S&D was erased, but I was able to download it.
- If I double-click on a photo in Windows Explorer, I get a popup that lists the name of the jpeg and says Invalid Entry to Registry. If I right click on the photo and go to any of the options the photo is opened except if I choose Photo.
- Firefox cannot properly display the Yahoo mail page, though Pale Moon and Opera can.
- I have Avast Anti-Virus and MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and when I run their scans, they find no issues.
Fresh built PC only about a month old. Runs amazingly but for some reason when I want to turn it off, it will not shut down and I need to hold the power button to shut it off. I'm afraid of eventually damaging components by shutting it down this way. Sometimes it works just as it should and others I have to hold the button to shut it off. Sometimes it will go to the swirly "I'm shutting down" screen but will just stay there until I hold the power button. My power button is setup so 1 press should shut it down, but when it's not going to Shutdown the power button does nothing unless I hold it to shut it off.
View 7 RepliesThe laptop of my mom which has been upgraded from Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 10 Pro won't shut down; when I choose for Shutdown it reboots itself.
Even by using the commandpromt it doesn't shut down; any solutions?
My HP simply won't shut down! I choose the "shut down" option; it appears to shut down; screen goes black; but power like and wifi light stay on! I have to press the power button to shut down entirely - as it used to, properly before the windows 10 upgrade. Feel like moving to Apple Mac!
View 1 RepliesI just installed windows 10. And now i can't shut down. I can see its moving out of windows 10, Than it goes black and stays there.
View 2 RepliesMy laptop pc with Windows 10 Pro has decided that when given the order to shut down it will do so, but then after 5 seconds or perhaps up to 15 minutes later it will reboot. Something is telling it to restart.
I have already done this to try to stop it: In the elevated command prompt, copy and paste the command below, and press Enter.
powercfg -h off
My BCD is configured as follows:

If I Restart to switch between operating systems, I get the Legacy boot menu every time. However, after I Shut Down and then power on the system again, I get the Metro boot menu. The Metro boot menu is butt ugly and also causes a second POST cycle when I switch to Ubuntu.
How to correct this behavior? I find that if I Shut Down from Ubuntu, I get the Legacy boot menu after power on. It is only when I Shut Down from Windows that I get the Metro boot menu.
So second time on 10. I shut down my computer, and when I start it a couple days later, all my preferences are gone. All my work from home log in and service programs...gone! Documents off inn la la land somewhere. It looks like it re-installs 10 for the very first time with Coronia, Edge, etc and more junk. Need to finding my documents and stopping this from happening after a simple shut down for a few days!!! Can I un-install 10 and go back to 8 without loosing anything?
View 1 RepliesI recently installed windows 10 in my computer, but i got a problem : my computer does not fully shutdown when i click the shut down button in the start menu, it just closes apps, screen turns black, but the pc is still on and i can say this because keyboards lights are still on (power one, wifi one) and i am forced to press the power button for 5 seconds to force a shutdown and then turn it on again. I searched on internet some solutions and the most common problem seems related to the fast startup feature.
