Downloaded But Not Updating - How To Manually Start

Aug 3, 2015

Yesterday 100% Win 10 update files were downloaded around 1 PM. Automatic updates are scheduled at daily 3 PM. I got a notification in action center that "Windows Update will be installed automatically at scheduled time." Still after a day nothing has happened. Even today at 3 PM nothing happened. 'Windows 10' app says that "OK, notify me when ready." There's $Windows.~BT folder having size of 4.4 GB on C drive. I'm using Windows 7 SP1 32-bit.

Start Menu Search Cannot Even Find App That Is Manually Pinned To Start

Aug 15, 2015

I installed Windows 10 very recently and I like it, but I have a VERY BIG show-stopper: when I try to do search in the start menu, it's terrible; it cannot even find an application that I have manually pinned to start. I didn't have any such problem with Windows 8.1. I have also installed some other desktop applications, for example GitHub for Windows, but when I start to to type "Git...", it only finds "GitHub" and it cannot find "Git Shell" and I have to go to all programs, find "G", then expand the folder for this application and run that application.

Manually Add Items To Start Menu Metro Screen

Nov 3, 2015

Everything is accessible through the "all apps" section, but I'm adding important items onto the metro screen, and while I'm currently doing this by dragging-and-dropping I'm hoping there is another way (as I will not be able to do this with apps running under Symantec Workspace Virtualization unless I do global captures. If you are not familiar with this product, don't worry about it, you don't need to be to answer my question.). Perhaps adding items can be accomplished by placing shortcuts in some special folder somewhere, or editing some file? an alternative way to drag-and-dropping items onto the metro screen.

Installation :: Will Not Start Download - Nothing Gets Downloaded And No Other Window Pops Up

Aug 12, 2015

I am really frustrated trying to install Windows 10 from Windows 7 Home Premium in my MSI S6000 laptop. I click on the "Get Windows 10" icon and a window pops-up saying: "Your free Windows 10 upgrade is here!" I click on the button "OK Let's continue" and that is the end of it. I see the wheel rotating for an hour or two and nothing happens. Nothing gets downloaded and no other window pops up. I have pops up allowed, and everything else is at the default settings. What is wrong with y Windows 10 upgrade?

Manually Setting Location

Sep 5, 2015

As my desktop PC (like a lot of I suspect other PC's) doesn't have built in GPS, it means that whenever Windows 10 tries to automatically determine where am I (for example, when I'm looking at the built in map client, or Cortana is finding something nearby) it actually thinks I'm around 70 miles away.

Is there any way to manually set my actual location more accurately in Windows 10?

How To Manually Revert To Windows 7

Nov 11, 2015

I'd like to perform a manual revert to Windows 7.An elderly client accidentally upgraded what I believe was Windows 7 Home to Windows 10. This was within the last week, and Windows.OLD is still there, but “Go back to Windows 7” is not an option.

(Yes, he was the only user, and he was an admin. For some reason, Windows 10 says it's the Pro edition now. I don't know why. I don't understand why “Go back to Windows 7” isn't present. Client doesn't know what he did, nor what options he selected along the way. Yes, a clean reinstall could be done, but returning to the old setup saves about four hours of other reinstalls and setups.)

Microsoft has a KB971760 "How to restore a Windows 7-based computer to a previous Windows installation by using the Windows.old folder".I'd like to confirm that this same process would work from Windows 10 to Windows 7.

Cannot Connect To The Internet And Unable To Change DNS Manually

Dec 11, 2015

I'm running Windows 10 (upgraded from 7 a month or so ago) on an HP Pavilion g6 laptop. My computer suddenly stopped being able to connect to the internet a few hrs ago and now no website opens in any browser. Torrents work fine, surprisingly.

Troubleshooting gives me this "Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource is not responding" ... I tried the flushdns, registerdns, ... routine but it doesn't work. Switching the router off and on again didn't work either.

When I try to change the DNS manually in advanced adapter options, on selecting 'validate upon exit' and closing the window, I get this message "Unexpected condition occurred. Not all of the changes could be made".

Upon googling I noticed on some forums people were pointing fingers at Virtualbox Bridged Networking Driver and VMWare Bridge Protocol. I can see these in the Properties window, but upon trying to uninstall these, I get another error 0x8007007E

I have uninstalled VMware, but the damn protocol is still there. I'm not sure if that is really what is preventing me from making changes to the Network's properties like DNS and IP ...

Networking :: WiFi Keeps Dropping After Reconnecting Manually On Surface Pro 3

Dec 1, 2015

Something strange is happening to my surface pro 3 running windows 10 Pro 64bit. At first, I was trying to surf on the net and received something like server connections timed out. I then checked on my wifi status by hovering my mouse over the wifi icon at the system tray and it said "internet access". This is usually a good sign. But still unable to load any external pages on the firefox browser.

I then had to run the diagnosis over the wifi network and the wifi came back alive. By the way, by disconnecting and reconnecting the wifi wouldn't fix the internet connection issue.

After 3 minutes or so, the internet was down again. I had to run diagnosis over the wifi network and it worked again.

After this, I tried to check to see if there was any updates that I need to install. I found that it's in the middle of downloading "upgrade to windows 10 pro, version 1511, 10586". This is the latest major upgrade from Microsoft.

By now, I kinda got tired of running diagnosis on the wifi network. I got to hook it up with the ethernet wire connection. Now, I can access the Internet and the windows update started downloading without any interruption. But I can't rely on the ethernet cable for the stable internet connection.

My question is would this wifi dropout issue be caused by this windows update download. By the way, I have also disabled Hyper-V on this machine.

Customization :: How To Manually Install Screen Saver Files

Oct 28, 2015

I have a screen saver that was a bonus feature of a Hidden Object Game I played. After I removed the game I still had the screen saver files in the game's program directory however it no longer worked. I looked up online somewhere that there are three directories that are used for screen savers on windows 10 (just to make life complicated! as far as I know in previous windows version there was on directory for them!). The directories I found are as follows:

C:WindowsC:Windowssystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64 (on 64-bit versions of Windows. So I copied and pasted all the files for the screen saver into each of these directories. In the screensaver settings window it lists the screen saver I am trying to use and shows it in the little monitor preview box. however when I actually click the preview button to see if it is working I get a black screen and nothing else. When I click the mouse I get the chime error sound. So I alt+tab to get out of it and there is an error window. I saved the error log and this is what it contained (never mind the times at the beginning of each line, that's just reflective of when the error occurred and when I saved the log):

12:49:26 PM: Cannot enumerate files in directory 'C:/WINDOWS/system32/Com/dmp' (error 5: access is denied.)
12:49:26 PM: Cannot enumerate files in directory 'C:/WINDOWS/system32/config' (error 5: access is denied.)
12:49:26 PM: Cannot enumerate files in directory 'C:/WINDOWS/system32/inetsrv/Config' (error 5: access is denied.)
12:49:26 PM: Cannot enumerate files in directory 'C:/WINDOWS/system32/LogFiles/Fax/Incoming' (error 5: access is denied.)

[code]....

how to fix it so my screen saver will work properly? I realize that screen savers are a relic of the past but in my case it's actually useful because it keeps my monitor from turning off and my pc from going into standby when I am in the middle of doing something but have to step away for a moment to answer the phone, or door or whatever.

Updates :: Add Windows Update To Control Panel Manually

Dec 15, 2015

I figured out how to put Windows update in control panel without any secondary software. I used Brink's Add Group Policy to Control panel registry hack in the sevenforums.com as a template.

I modified to look like this.

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{36eef7db-88ad-4e81-ad49-0e313f0c35f8}]@="Windows Update" "InfoTip"="Starts Windows Update (With Shortcut Key)""System.ControlPanel.Category"="5"[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{36eef7db-88ad-4e81-ad49-0e313f0c35f8}DefaultIcon]@="C:WindowsSystem32imageres.dll, 74"[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{36eef7db-88ad-4e81-ad49-0e313f0c35f8}Shell][HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{36eef7db-88ad-4e81-ad49-0e313f0c35f8}ShellOpen][HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{36eef7db-88ad-4e81-ad49-0e313f0c35f8}ShellOpenCommand] @="control /name microsoft.WindowsUpdate"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerControlPanelNameSpace{36eef7db-88ad-4e81-ad49-0e313f0c35f8}]@="Add Windows Update to Control Panel"

The only thing I can't figure out is where the default Windows update icon is. I created one for my system but.. I don't know who would like it. Just change imageres.dll to your icon file with the number or just change the ",74" to another icon in imageres.dll

Code:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCLSID{36eef7db-88ad-4e81-ad49-0e313f0c35f8}DefaultIcon] @="C:WindowsSystem32imageres.dll, 74"

Installation :: Clean Install - How To Manually Create Special Partitions

Feb 2, 2016

I want to clean install Windows 10, and I already did that before using the tutorial here. But last time I did not have Ubuntu install.

And in the tutorial, you must delete all partitions in order for Windows to create the special necessary partitions (Recovery, MSR, MBR etc..)

But now that I have a Linux partition that I don't want to delete, and according to the tutorial, Windows installation will not create these partitions.

How can I manually create them? Is it simply allocating a space for them and naming them the proper way and Windows will know how to use them? Or there's more than that? Also, What happens if I do not have these partitions?

Updates :: Windows Update Reverting To Automatic After Being Manually Disabled?

Mar 5, 2016

1) I disabled Windows Update in Services to avoid having to deal with the updates. Later I put it on "manual" instead of "disabled". Today I find that my computer is "installing updates" WITHOUT a) my permission and b) without notifying me that there were updates to install. This thrashed my hard drive with near constant 100% usage from something called Windows Modules Installer Worker. I killed the process, rebooted after some Adobe Reader issue (unrelated....I think). Upon selecting "restart" Windows informs me that it is updating my system WITHOUT my permission. It continues, updates, says finished, restarts to 0%, finishes, reboots.

Upon restart--which takes FOREVER by the way without the "updating" message, when it used to only take a few seconds to boot up--I go to Services where I find Windows Update is set on "running". Even though I manually stopped it, and set it to "manual trigger" start....

2) After restart when I am in Services to kill Windows Update and set to manual--again--I see something called Update Agent, set to run automatically. I do not remember this service from before, and what it does different from Windows Update. I set it on manual as well.

What does Update Agent do differently from Windows Update? They are listed as separate services

What happened to make my computer update without my consent??

Computer Sleeps / Wakes Fine Manually But Won't Wake From Auto-sleep

Oct 10, 2015

My motherboard is a P8Z77-V, with Gigabyte 7950 video card, if that matters.

I did the windows 10 upgrade, and all seems well, except waking from Standby.

If I go into start menu, and choose sleep, everything spins down, and the computer shuts itself off. I am assuming this 'sleep' is some sort of hibernate.

But when I leave the computer over night I come back and the monitors are off,but lights on tower on. I am assuming this is standby mode? Anyway, I can't wake the computer from it, using mouse or keyboard (both USB). Clicking power button on tower does nothing. I generally have to click the reset button on tower and do a full boot sequence. When I log in, I do not get a message about windows not shutting down properly (maybe that message is no more in 10?), but clearly it is a fresh desktop.

I reset all bios settings, and update to most recent bios. I have the latest graphics drivers.

Here is some investigating I did, hopefully it works:

Code:
D:UsersShea.Wilbur>powercfg /aThe following sleep states are available on this system: Standby (S3) Hibernate Hybrid Sleep Fast StartupThe following sleep states are not available on this system: Standby (S1) The system firmware does not support this standby state. Standby (S2) The system firmware does not support this standby state. Standby (S0 Low Power Idle) The system firmware does not support this standby state.

Code:
C:WINDOWSsystem32>powercfg /sleepstudyS0 Low Power Idle is not supported on this machine. Cannot run tool. BIOS settings to check?
