Get Rid Of Extra Column In Folders?

View 9 RepliesAfter the install of windows 10 there were 2 columns in the start menu. I deleted those and filled up one column. How to get a second column to the right of the first column?
I've added a shortcut to a new sub-menu and can drag and drop it above and below the first sub-menu, but not to the right.
I have Window 10 Preview installed on two PCs, my SP3 and my desktop box (an Alienware system). I have two Microsoft accounts (home and work), and both accounts have logins on both PCs. With one login, my work account on my desktop PC, the start menu column width is 6, meaning I can have 6 small icons per row (or 3 medium icons, or 1 medium and 1 wide). The other three logins all have a start menu column width of 8 (or 4 medium icons, or 2 wide). I greatly prefer the 8.
I find it extra odd that if I log in to my SP3 with my work account I have a start menu with a width of 8 but if I log on to my desktop with that same account I have a width of 6. This is even with all of the sync settings turned on (doesn't seem like they are syncing all the much stuff yet). Maybe there's a registry setting for it somewhere, and the desktop account was created after the point when the default changed from 8 to 6.
One productivity feature I really miss from OS X is the column view in Finder. It can be a real headache to parse through root and subfolders in File Explorer without being able to see your path clearly. There are third-party programs such as UltraExplorer that allow this functionality. Is there any word of Microsoft providing a native solution in future builds?
View 1 RepliesHow do I narrow the tiles column in the start menu?
I have unpinned many of the tiles on the start menu and moved others around so that I have only one row of tiles and I would like to make the column narrower, but I haven't been able to. I made the double arrows show on the right side, and I click and hold the arrows to move it to the left, but nothing happens. Am I missing something?
You can set many columns in file explorer - details by right clicking on any column title and selecting one or more titles. I've added "file extension" and "attribute" to one window. This will allow sorting by the column title. I cannot find a way to save this setup as a default for all instances. The settings disappear after closing the window. There used to be an option to apply changes to all explorer windows but I can't find it in Win 10.
View 3 RepliesOn Windows 7 I also used to have my Favourites running down the left of the desktop on my Windows 7 and I can't find them on Windows 10.
View 4 RepliesI'm currently using Windows 10 and have a 1TB hard disk. It has been divided into 4 parts. One for OS, another for it's drivers, and the rest 2 primary partitions for media storage.
Now, I need to install Ubuntu as well and I'm not sure how to go about it. I have a few queries like: Is it possible to merge the two extra drives together and in turn creating a partition for Ubuntu. Is that even possible. Should the new partition for Ubuntu be logical or primary, and the reason for choosing the same.
This is my home computer. I just upgraded to Windows 10 (Home). At my login screen I see all my family's login names (as I should) but I also see 6 logins labeled "Password".
It seems that each "Password" login is associated with an individual user. So if I select one of the "Password" logins it will bring up the login for "Kevin" select a different one and it will up the login for say "Amanda" etc... This is just confusing is there anyway of getting rid of these extra logins?
Somehow, I tripped something that adds an extra line to the Sender line in my Microsoft Outlook in Windows 10(formerly Hotmail). Now I get TWO indications of who the sender is, instead of just one. The extra sender line is in smaller font, and appears just above the “normal” sender name. The “Junk” page doesn’t have this doubling up feature. I’ve gone through every settings and option feature, and none of them even mention it. how to get rid of the additional sender line?
View 6 RepliesI have a Samsung 700T tablet (think Surface Pro). It only as a 128GB SSD, but I read about a trick Surface Pro owners use to add extra storage. You format an SD card as NTFS, don't give it a drive letter, then map it to a folder on your C: drive.
It works great - I've added a 128 gig SD card & essentially doubled my storage, but I'm running into one problem. Windows 10 doesn't count the SD card when it calculates free space. I have all my libraries mapped to the SD card, including my downloads folder. When I try to download something large, Windows reports there isn't enough space & Chrome refuses to download the file.
Is there any way to get the system to recognize the extra space?
OK so I received the update on my clean install of win 10 on my split Intel NVME SSD. Just went to do a Macrium image backup and discovered that the update has created an extra partition on my drive. Although small it is stealing space from my second partition that I save the backups to. I also have some extra files on C: as shown.
To regain space what files can I delete? Can I restore the extra partition without damaging windows. Do I need to include the extra small partition with C: for a Macrium backup to be able to restore if anything gets screwed? I was expecting the update to just update the C:/ drive.
In ADMIN TOOLS|COMPUTER MGMT|DISK MGMT the following are listed...
C: 952 GB
"healthy recovery partition" 450 MB (the box is shaded)
"healthy recovery partition" 449 MB
D: 909 GB
How can I get rid of the recovery partitions (or at least one, if the other is required) and reclaim the unused space for C: ?
I want to add extra storage to my Surface Pro 3. I have 128gb on my HDD and would like to add at least another 64gb.
Would I be better with an SD card or Flash Drive?
So, I've had this 1Tb HDD lying around unused, so I had the bright idea of shoving it in place of my Dell Latitude E6410's original 640Gb HDD, use that in place of the old 60Gb HDD on my T60 (a mere 60Gbs just weren't enough to accommodate my Google Drive - running on Linux with InSync - and Mega cloud storage), and put my latest W10 Pro system image on the 1Tb in the E6410.
All well and good so far - except when I checked the partitions after I reinstalled the system image from the original 640Gb, this is what I got:
Which wasn't too surprising, given how Windows works. What I wanted to do was to expand C: into all that extra unallocated space, but as you can see, the recovery partition is in the way. I wouldn't be too surprised, either, if there was no workaround that doesn't involve reinstalling Windows.
is there any way to remove all that useless space created by the at a glance menu?

I tried this and it didn't work. But together with what I did next it probably worked.
Open up the folder with the pictures and click on the View tab
Next click on Options to the far right
Then Click on Change folder and search options
This opens up an options menu
Navigate to the view tab
uncheck the box that says Always show icons, never thumbnails
And Check the box that says Display file icon on thumbnails.
I have the option "Show recently opened items in Jump Lists on Start or the taskbar" off.
However since the last update whenever I either copy or move a file into any folder windows puts that folder under the Recent group in the taskbar.
On Windows 7 start menu you could have a folder such as EA Games and then sub folders within. For example a folder for tiger woods golf, a folder for say Fifa and so on. It seems on Windows 10 you can only have one folder level. I have tried creating sub folders but all the shortcuts within the sub folders all appear under the one top/master folder when actually viewing the start menu. Am I correct in this observation/restriction?
View 9 RepliesI noticed my menu bar icons started showing a different icon (the default windows program icon) for some reason and Internet sites html started messing up too, so i decided to reboot my computer. Now my background is gone, it's just black. And all my folders and programs are gone. There's just one folder left on my desktop and all of them are empty. My downloads folder is also empty, there's just one folder left and its empty.

I can not name New Folders.
I can rename text or doc files.
This is the error I receive Rename Folder
Can't find the specified file Make sure you specify the correct path and file name
3 days ago I was exploring an older hard drive. When I tried to explore the desktop folder of that drive Windows Vista, it wouldn't open. It suggested that i shared the folder so I could explore it or copy files from that folder(which is what I originally wanted to do). When I did, the folders on any drive stopped opening. When I try to open any folder, it flashes white and returns to the desktop.
View 1 RepliesEvery window I open, along the left side, under "Quick access", there's a long long list of different places, folders etc.
Is there any way to trim this list? In particular, for some reason C drive, as well as any attached external drives, show up twice each. There doesn't seem to be any way of getting them to remember a default view - the same things appear everytime I open every folder. This didn't happen in Win7. I'm logged in as admin, there are no other accounts
I've had Windows 10 for about a month now. Everything has been going well. Then this AM I tried to open a folder on my desktop but it will not open. I right click on it to only go back to my home screen.I cant even get into my documents.
No folders what so ever. I clicked on properties to check the securities and all is well there.
Since I have upgraded to Windows 10 Pro, I noticed that all my folders' attributes are read only . Even if I create new folders, they are read only on creation. When I try to remove the read only attribute in the folder properties, it looks like it's removed, but when I check it again, it shows that it's read only. I tried other methods, like diskpart, and tried to take ownership of the folders
Is there any way to fix this problem? I can create new files and modify existing files in the folders without any problem, but it's really annoying, for example Steam says it can't install games and updates, because the folder what I choose to install games is in read only mode, the only solution is to run it as an administrator. I need to run almost every program as an admin, to make them usable, or they report problems with read only folders. The OS itself is up to date.
I have been unable to create new folders in File Explorer. When I click on a new folder icon, I get the "not responding" message and have to exit the application. This began happening several weeks ago and is now happening whenever I try to create a new folder.
