Oct 14, 2015I had changed the system variables in order to change the default install drive. My C drive is an SSD and I didn't want Adobe hashing up my SSD if it wasn't necessary. Everything seemed to be working well, but windows update will not apply updates and internet explorer (and some other) software will not run. Possibly due to the system variables, but I am unsure what to change or if that is even at fault.

I need to be able to update, and IE has to be used occasionally. (I exclusively use chrome so I hadn't really noticed that IE wasn't working.)

Jan 10, 2016When I press/click on Start, and then type 'Power' for instance to get PowerShell, I want to right click and Run as administrator. Somehow that is gone. I can only Pin to Start. Did updates, reboots, etc. I cannot even click and drag icons from the Start menu - just has a red X. I had to make a shortcut on the desktop to run PowerShell as an admin. It works on another Windows 10 machine no issues.

Additionally, Start Menu and tray options, such as volume slider and wi-fi menu are not opening anymore. Settings starts, though. Oct 1, 2015Previously I had an update which windows kept on updating and undoing the update for some reason. After which i tried to find for a solution online and somehow deleted the entire of the Software Distribution folder located in the C:Windows folder.
Right now my windows update is unable to find any updates at all as it is forever on the "Checking for updates" section. I've tried using the command prompt to scan the SFC ("sfc /scannow") and also the re-creation of the SystemDistribution folder through stopping the service, deleting it and then starting it again... but it's still the same.

Nov 2, 2015I'm not sure what to do. I ran a few cleanup programs. adwcleaner, ccleaner, etc and opened up edge and all the bookmarks were gone. But also to add I imported Google Bookmarks from my phone into the bookmarks also. So I had all my bookmarks in one place. But the Edge bookmarks were only saved on Edge and I can't remember those important websites I need.

2. A desktop shortcut to Cortana works.
3. The start menu Cortana shortcut launches Store (it was working at some point..)
Win 10 is now running... well, actually quite smoothly- as far as I know, this is the only oddity (until I turn over another stone..)
I normally use Classic shell, and don't use Cortana. However, having found changing settings has disrupted Cortana, I sometimes check- I feel I've seen a comment about this somewhere.
I tried this:

Can't Pin Some Items In Start Menu To Start Screen?
Aug 2, 2015Any of the items under games in this screen shot will not pin to my Start Screen? They will pin to my taskbar though. It's windows 10 Enterprise if that matters. I can right click and select Pin to Start, but nothing happens. Right click again and Pin To Start is still listed as an option, but doesn't do anything?

Aug 15, 2015I've a sony laptop cum tablet (ultra book) with intel core i7 processor. I updated to Windows 10 today (previous version Pro windows 8). The install was successful but after the install my start up screen started flickering. I shut down and restarted the laptop and now the opening screen is frozen at the log in page which says- 'fast access, face recognition'. The camera is also not working to recognize the face. I'm also not able to log in manually. (I used to have face recognition mode with pro windows 8)
The laptop is not shutting down any more and don't accept alt+cont+delete command.

Jul 31, 2015After installing Windows 10 my laptop screen is flashing during thw start up menu. Some of the icons are loaded, others are not. The screen flashes constantly. I have not attempted to go into safe mode yet. My laptop met all the requirements for an upgrage so I am frustrated todaay with this.

Have to say, I really want the Windows 8 style Start back. Muscle memory has me wanting to hit Start, and then quickly mouse over to the This PC tile in the lower left corner. There is no more lower left corner.

Apr 10, 2015I just performed a fresh install of Windows 10 10049 on my Surface Pro 3 and now the Start menu/screen does not show when I press the Start button. Looking for regedit to re enable the menu. The problem existed on 10041 but was working initially after the install completed but stopped working shortly afterwards.

If I were at work I'd be thinking about some LDAP setting and it would be all right, but here I'm at home, I have a very straightforward network and configuration.I'm not 100% sure, but I seem to recall this red text line wasn't there after the fresh install I did some weeks ago.
Still I can't think of anything that I tweaked that might have affected that.The only thing I changed is in the windows hidden advanced settings, where I chose so that Windows Update doesn't automatically download/install stuff, but asks for my permission first.

Sep 13, 2015I have uninstalled KB3035583 which has removed the windows 10 script from my taskbar, however I am still getting a message that there is an important update when I boot up to the initial Windows 8.1 screen before my login. On checking what important updates are available, it is only the Windows 10, KB3035583 that it is obviously trying to get me to update again.
After 2 weeks of failure on updating to Windows 10, I have decided to stay with 8.1. I now want to remove the advice to install importantant updates, that pertain to Windows 10, but still showing those for my Windows 8.1 system. At this point, when getting this message, I don't know if it is still just for Windows 10, or if new updates are available for my 8.1?
Windows Explorer And Start Menu
Feb 10, 2016I've installed office 2016 on my desktop, and the icons on the start menu are just blank icons. They have the background colors for each app, but the actual program icon is not there. i've already tried reinstalling the entire suite, running a number of programs, etc. but nothing has worked so far.
my other current issue is when I restart explore the start menu and desktop is completely unresponsive, and I have to restart the computer to fix the issue.

Aug 25, 2015I have been struggling for several days with screen flickering in Windows 10 2 days after I upgraded. I immediately tried to return to a previous restore point which made no difference. I then tried to use the safe mode to try to figure out if some software was causing the problem. In doing so, I uninstalled several programs to no avail. Consideration was also given to the display card.
Looking back, I now know that the only software that was installed was AVG anti-virus. I spent most of last night trying to remove all traces of it, even as far as cleaning out the Registry, but the problem still persists. The PC is completely useless as the start menu cannot be accessed.
Manually Add Items To Start Menu Metro Screen
Nov 3, 2015Everything is accessible through the "all apps" section, but I'm adding important items onto the metro screen, and while I'm currently doing this by dragging-and-dropping I'm hoping there is another way (as I will not be able to do this with apps running under Symantec Workspace Virtualization unless I do global captures. If you are not familiar with this product, don't worry about it, you don't need to be to answer my question.). Perhaps adding items can be accomplished by placing shortcuts in some special folder somewhere, or editing some file? an alternative way to drag-and-dropping items onto the metro screen.
