I was trying to redirect my game save files in my documents which is on my ssd where windows 10 is installed on to my hard drive when I accidently replaced my user folder with the documents one, now all the files which were in my user folder are in the documents one as well as the games which were in the document file!!!I tried to put it back but the two files seem to have merged.
View 1 RepliesAs with many I have upgraded to Windows 10 today and it is going well except for the fact I am unable to save any files or create new ones in the Documents and Pictures folders or any sub-folders within these folders. For instance, I tried to save an image created in paint and attempted to save it in the Pictures folder, it gave me the error message seen in this picture below:
Note, I am the only user on the system, and also the admin account so I do not know why it says this. Clicking Yes on the box does nothing and the same thing still occurs afterward. In addition, bringing up the right click menu and going to new only allows me to create a new folder, and the windows admin shield icon appears next to it. Deleting files also prompts me to ask for admin permission but in that case I can simply click the continue button and it goes through.
Vista had file box at the top of e-mail page that would allow saving e-mails. Windows 10 has no file box thst I can find. Have clicked everything on e-mail pages. Also I see no archive selection so I am using chats.
View 6 RepliesWhenever I try to 'save as' in a documents folder, it flashes up "you don't have permission to save in this location. Contact the administrator to obtain permission. Would you like to save in the documents folder instead?" When I click 'Yes' I just go round in circles to be told I do not have permission??? I have followed instructions to 'Run as administrator' and on a couple of occasions I have managed to save things (I'm not sure how??) but next time I go into it, it reverts back to the same error message. Also it is hit and miss, and near impossible to search and locate any files.

I have seen all the do not work fixes and to be honest getting frustrated, I have changed all permissions to administrator in all boxes checked.

When I try to save to local C drive (Documents) I get an error:
"SAVE AS ... You don't have permission to modify files in this network location. Contact the administrator per [sic] permission to make these changes."
I have looked at the C drive and can see no obvious issues, e.g. 'read only' is not set.
PROBLEM: MS Office 2013 can't save files anywhere except in OneDrive (which I don't want to use).
BACKGROUND: Win10 upgrade on Alienware 17 R2 (2015 model) from 8.1 went well - no errors.After using for a few days (normal shutdown / startups), used MS Word to create a document.

Now every time I use Word, it also tries to save normal.docx which it can't save, and which takes multiple steps to finally abandon saving. Since word is used by Outlook, it also means that I have the normal.docx style sheet issue when composing mail or opening attachments. Installed Office 2016 in trial mode. No change. Exactly the same problem with Office 2016 as Office 2013.
I'd like to redirect the Downloads folder to a different disk (D drive). What's the best method?
a. Right click Downloads folder -> Location -> change path
b. or, use mklink?
After a recent upgrade to Windows 10 pro I lost all my files within my documents The funny thing is that all files within my pictures and video, music were not affected.

After installing Windows 10, I downloaded a lot of files as well as played a lot of games without logging in to my Microsoft account. I only recently logged into my Microsoft account and after I restarted my PC after updating Windows 10, all files in my documents folder disappeared. All save game files, all downloads - everything completely disappeared. I tried using the Search option and I couldn't find any files from that time.

I verified that I am logged on as the Administrator, but the system will not allow me to save files into any folder. Can only save to desktop.
View 10 RepliesAs described above, I have games with varying degrees of the problem. Some cannot save settings, still some other cannot save game progression, the worst has it both. I was able to do various workarounds that let me partially solve the problem.
However, I hit a block with my newly installed Metro Last Light Redux, it doesn't write any saves anywhere. I Googled my problem and no solution fit me, I tried writing an "attrib" modification on "My Documents" using an elevated command prompt to rid the "Read-Only" attribute but that still didn't work. I tried taking ownership of the folders in question but still nothing.
Is there a way to change the way the folders and files are displayed in My Documents?
I recently upgraded to 10 but I have a slight issue with 'My Documents'. Most of my files are in folders in My Documents and in Windows 7 I was able to filter by most recent updated with folders listed first followed by the documents which are not saved in folders. I have not found a way to duplicate this convenient display in 10.
At 1am December 10th everything was there, as of 7am everything is missing. All my files and half of my desktop icons are gone. What happened? What can I do to retrieve my important stuff?

View 1 RepliesI have had Windows 10 installed for a while and decided the other day to save anew picture from my webcam for my personal communications etc. I did get the webcam on and clicked take picture. When I went to use the picture it was not where the systemsaid it would be. Nothing had been saved. After checking the properties of the directory the system said I did not have permission to use that directory.
I also tried to download a PDF to my download directory and the file was not saved for the same reason. Their is obviously a permission problem from going to Windows 10. I previously had Windows 7 Home.
It just sits there with a red screen and circling dots for hours. I have no access to change the boot options or anything else. I did find a thread from someone claiming to be a Microsoft Software engineer giving directions to change ownership of files on the computer. After 3+ hours it finally finished and put out some message about changing profile or something like that. I just booted the system. It took another 3+ hour to complete the reboot and apparently undid al the ownership changes. I gave up for a day or more but turned on the computer last night. Six hours later it still spinning white dot on a red background with no access to any OS.

View 3 RepliesI got a new windows 10 laptop a few weeks ago and I'm belatedly getting around to creating a system recovery disk on usb. I'm intending to use the standard windows 10 option 'create a recovery drive'. Someone mentioned that among other things this would be useful if I ever wanted to sell the machine on further down the line and wanted to do a clean install.
My question is, does the standard recovery disk save personal data because I've already loaded some music, docs, notes vids and added a few browser bookmarks etc. Basically I'm hoping it doesn't because I wouldn't want to pass anything on. (I already do 2 separate backups of my personal stuff in case of failure, so that's not an issue)...
Once it was my turn to gain the free Windows 10 installation I went straight ahead and everything went well except when I went to save a photo to My Photos. Windows 10 began repeatedly asking for "administrator permission" to save to my OWN folders on my OWN laptop. My PC was not in a Homegroup, neither was it in a network of other PC's....I WAS the administrator!
If you encounter this problem (and many will) you may want to try my solution which after exhausting all other avenues including disabling inheritance and mucking about with Permissions, this does indeed work.
Windows 10 and Microsoft seem to think all PC's are networked (they are not) and so the solution is to join the Homegroup with yourself as the only member, that way you become "administrator" and gain back control of your files.
Start menu (bottom left) - type "Homegroup" in search box and then click on "settings" - click "Homegroup" - then follow instructions to set up a new Homegroup and make a note of the password it generates. Chose what folders to 'share' or not and then you will become homegroup administrator with full permissions.
