I'm using Windows 10 and I changed all of my When Computer Sleeps settings and my screen still goes black after about 30 seconds of inactivity. Not really sure why this happens because I changed all of the settings for the screen shutting off to never.
View 6 RepliesI just got a second hand laptop - Acer V3-771G with an Elan touchpad and I put a new SSHD hard drive in it and installed Windows 10 fresh.
I see lots of issues with ELAN touchpads but it seems as though Microsoft has produce one that installs and fixes most scrolling issues.
However, I have a strange one. When I enable vertical scrolling in the driver, it works as long as the mouse is active - and for up to 5 seconds after. But when I stop using the touchpad and go to scroll again after 5 seconds, it doesn't work anymore! It's like it disables it after inactivity - but only 5 seconds?
I've uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, tried various versions - but of course Acer doesn't support Windows 10 on this older model laptop (circa 2012) so there are no specific drivers for it on their site. Everything works except for this scrolling after 5 seconds - which I can recreate every single time.
I just installed Windows 10, but every time I start up the computer, it will show a black screen before getting to the login screen and then the computer will restart by itself after about 5 seconds.
It does this over and over again.
Some things I've tried:
- I have multiple monitors, so I tried disabling the other in BIOS. Didn't work.
- I tried booting from the integrated GPU rather than my NVidia GPU. Didn't work.
- I unplugged my second monitor. Didn't work.
- I updated my NVidia driver through safe mode. Didn't work.
My mother has a HP Touchsmart 600 that I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Windows 10 works fine on there, once it finally boots up. I've noticed this scenario. Power Button to turn on computerBIOS DisplaysWindows 10 logo displaysscreen goes completely black for a couple of seconds Screen comes back on, stays dark/gray and I can see my mouse pointer and it moves. The boot process hangs here for several minutes, usually and most of the time, the computer doesn't even go past this point.EVENTUALLY, after several minutes, Windows 10 finally gets to the login screen, if it is going to login.
View 6 RepliesI have Windows 10..Just recently I have found that when I open a folder on my desktop which opens in maximized mode, and then go ahead and click to restore the window to a smaller size, instead of doing so, the window restores to the width of the three buttons at the top (minimize, restore, close) and then the file explorer window crashes and freezes for a few seconds, my screen goes black for a few seconds, then I am returned to the desktop, where the window has closed.Is this a sign of hard drive corruption?
View 1 RepliesThis might be a stupid question but I havent found a solution for it myself, probably looking in all the wrong places.. would like to be able to have my computer go to the lock screen after an alotted time of inactivity without turning off the screen itself as in the power settings. I usually have screen shutoff/sleep set for longer periods but would like the screen to lock sooner.

I've recently found there are several ways to "lock" the screen on Windows 10 Pc (like using Windows+L).I also remember to read somewhere that usin lock screen reduces the lifetime of the ssd.I would like to know:
- Is there a way put the lock screen automatically, after 1 minute of inactivity (or 5) for example?.
-Is it true that using a lock screen would reduce the lifetime on the ssd?
-What are your personal recommendations about this?.
Windows 10 installed beautifully and seems to run fast on my Toshiba laptop but the screen flashes every 30 seconds. When it flashes it looks like a small window opens and closes immediately. Any dialogue box open is reset, and there is disk activity. 2 tasks pop up to the top of the list in Task Manager: dwm.exe and explorer.exe. It happens all the time, whether there are any applications open or not.
View 10 RepliesWhen starting up the screen seems to reboot. windows menus/ bottom menu and program icons mostly dissapear and re-appear.
In the mean time windows is practically unusable. Hard to start up any program.
No error messages appear on screen.
I upgraded from windows ultimate to windows 10. my computer boots through everything and finally brings up my old windows 7 desktop screen and then everything goes black, but mouse shows up on black screen. Is this a driver problem with windows 10? However, before the black screen appears the new start button and screen appears as the windows 10
View 1 RepliesAfter successfully installing Win 10 it ran without any issues for about 1 day then Edge refused to launch, the splash screen opens for about 10 seconds and then disappears. The only change made to Edge was to import bookmarks from IE. Unsure where to start looking for an answer.
View 13 RepliesI purchased a hp pavilion laptop a few months ago with Windows 10 pre-installed.
I haven't used it for a few days, turned it on this evening and I got a message on boot up saying
"preparing automatic repairs" and then my screen goes blank 3-5 seconds later.
I do not have a cursor and have tried various keys and different ways of trying to bring up some kind of option. I also tried plugging my laptop into my TV to see if it were perhaps the screen that was going wrong.
So I upgraded to Windows 10 and I was using it and shut down my computer. Now my computer turns on but won't load anything. It shows the windows loading screen for about 5 seconds and then goes blank and sits that way till I turn it off and restart.
View 1 RepliesI did a bit of research and this seems to have been an issue for a while, or has been in the past. Was upgrading to windows 10, I first had to restart my pc cause it was initially stuck on that preparing to install problem with the green bar being stuck around 25%.
It then got through that and began the installation process with the big circle and rebooting process. However around 91% when I last looked at it it was just black screen, this stayed this way for about 3-4 hours. I then decided to reboot the pc and it has now booted to the login screen. Is this a known bug or could there be a possible issue?
The problem seems a bit different as some people I saw have had to fall back on PC restore points etc. So not sure if it installed or what could be the problem.
Also side note, I upgraded my pc when windows 10 first publically released, but rolled back because I had about 5min shutdown times.
I have a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge with an Intel I5 processor, 64 bit with no hardware upgrades (stock). I had accidentally stepped on the screen (fell off my lap and then crunch) which was mangled beyond repair, so I have been using it similar to a tower, with a VGA and/or HDMI connected monitor (my HDMI cable went bad, I picked up a new cable but hadn't hooked it up to the second monitor. I started my free upgrade from Windows 7 Home Premium to 10 last night. I woke up to the black screen/mouse pointer issue which is what brought me to this thread. I tried the recommended fix:
1. Hit ctrl, type in password and enter
2. Win Key + P + Down Arrow. (Win Key + P only seems to do the same thing)
This brought up options to
1. Disconnect projector (Tried this and lost connection to the VGA even after reboot)
2. Duplicate (Screen is still black with mouse cursor, but I saw a little bit of red and blue pixels at the bottom where the task bar should be until I disconnected and re-connected the VGA, then it was back to black screen and cursor)
3. Extend (still black screen and cursor)
4. Connect Projector (still black screen and cursor)
I'm not sure what to do. I must have some OS installed, because I am able to also perform these operations from my USB Keyboard/Mouse. I'm just not sure how to get Windows back on my VGA connection (I haven't tried HDMI because I did not have it connected when I ran the update.) I thought Duplicate displays would do the trick, but apparently not. For as beat up as the laptop is on the outside, the hardware performs fine. I also have a 2nd laptop (work laptop, also a Lenovo W541) that I can use if any solution involves downloading something bootable.
When I boot up my computer (to windows 10). It will do the Asus splash screen then instead of going straight to windows if does this black screen with the kinda terminal thing (with no writing/text) then goes on to windows. Does this affect my computer?

View 7 RepliesI've disabled the screensaver and the auto sleep mode yet when I don't touch my computer for a few minutes it'll go into lock screen and ask me for my code to log back in. I've even set the "Don't show lockscreen" entry to active (in the sort of registry).
How can I get rid of this feature ? I don't want anything to show up when I leave my computer for a few minutes, I want nothing to move.
I installed 10 on three machines and one has a mind of it's own when it comes to sleeping. No matter how I set the power settings or screen savers if I get up and walk away from the machine it has gone into sleep mode when I come back.

View 3 RepliesI recently updated from Window 8.1 to Windows 10. The upgrade went fairly well except for my laptop monitor turning off after 1 or 2 minutes of inactivity. I have changed all power settings to appropriate times. At times, normally after a fresh restart, my screen saver kicks in correctly. However, after a few times of working correctly, my monitor begins to turn off again.
View 9 RepliesMy desktop monitors go to sleep after about a minute of inactivity no matter what I set sleep mode to do. I currently have it on "never" and it still sleeps to the lock screen. Extremely annoying. I talked to some others having the same issue but no one has a clue or has seen the issue discussed.
View 6 RepliesI didn't know where to put this thread, but because it has to do with system performance, I thought this might be the best place to post my issues with Win 10. Let me get straight to the point:Up-to-date Windows 10 install (ver 1511 OS Build 10586.36)I haven't tested it but it seems like when the computer becomes inactive after a period of time, the whole system freezes - the mouse isn't moving, the desktop remains static on the last windows that were there, the time remains static (it doesn't change), CTRL+ALT+DELETE doesn't work.
Only solution seems to be to a hard reboot.In all other aspects the computer works fine: no virus (as determined by up-to-date version of Free Avast AV), SSD runs super fast, computer reboots, shuts down and goes to sleep perfectly. It's just when I am working on the computer and get sidetracked and when the computer becomes inactive, the computer freezes.
System Specs (other relevant aspects of my system can be viewed on my system specs page):Custom Built: E6700 non-OC4 GB DDR2 RAMGTX 970 (up to date driver: 361.43) Is there some sort of log that I can call up to show what is causing this stall/freeze/hang-up?
The black screen occurs before login screen. It happens randomly. I have to move the mouse (haven't tried pressing keyboard) and it will show the login screen and windows will continue normally. On my device driver it shows only 1 display adapter that is NVIDIA GTX 970. My motherboard is H87-PLUS and its specs shows that it does have an Integrated Graphics Processor.
Tried installing Intel Graphics Driver but just shows 'This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing this software.' Tried disabling the lock screen too but its not working. Tried putting PCI-E as the default graphics in BIOS but its not working either. how could I prevent the black screen from showing up again?
