Slow Minimizing / Maximizing

Jan 15, 2016

I upgraded to Windows 10 today. I have two issues.

1. I play a game called "Starcraft II" and I have a problem with the game minimizing and maximizing sometimes very slowly, every 5th attempt or so. During this time it takes up to 40 seconds for the game to go through with the maximizing/minimizing process, and ending the task with task manager is not possible.

I have tried messing with MSConfig and reinstalling the game. No luck.

2. I have an old HDD on my PC installed with windows 7, and on my windows 7 SSD installation I could simply search for shortcuts I placed from my HDD into my SSD. This is no longer possible.

Shortcut For Maximizing From Snapped

Jan 27, 2016

I've recently updated to W10, and am hoping I'm missing a shortcut for maximising snapped windows.

I'm the sort of person that likes to minimise mouse use. I'm used to snapping windows to the left or right using the shortcut "Start + Left/Right Arrow". I can still use this, and I generally like the Snap Assist functionality that now comes with it.

However, I am currently finding it quite annoying to use keyboard shortcuts to get out of this view (i.e. when you have 1 screen snapped left and 1 screen snapped right). The only shortcut I can find for maximising a screen is "Start + Up Arrow", however this will instead snap it to the top quadrant (on its respective side), and snap assist will ask you what you want to snap to the bottom quadrant. From what I can see, you then have to Esc out of this and then try "Start + Up Arrow" again.

Is there not a keyboard shortcut to maximise directly from a snapped window? It's currently taking 3 keyboard shortcuts, which is sort of a paradox.

It sounds fairly basic, but it's quite annoying when you are regularly snapping windows to left/right, and something I could do easily on W7.

For completeness, steps to reproduce:

1. Have several windows open in W10, (min. 3). Also, have snap assist turned on in settings
2. "Start + Left Arrow" to snap active screen to left. Snap assist should appear on right
3. Use Arrow Keys and Enter to select a window to snap to right
Imagine working on these screens for a bit
4. Now try to maximise a window, use shortcut "Start + Up Arrow" - doesn't work, screen will snap to top left/right
5. Press Esc to exit Snap Assist
6. Again try to maximise window, use shortcut "Start + Up Arrow"

Any way to end the process at step 4, that would be lovely!

Performance :: Maximizing By Double Clicking Shortcuts Of Programs Take Long Time

Dec 29, 2015

Previously if I double clicked the shortcuts of Steam, Origin and Uplay while they were running instantly maximized their windows. Now if I double click them it takes a long time before they are maximized as if the computer is reloading them from scratch. I also have GOG Galaxy as a shortcut but it does not happen with that icon. What do you think changed?

The only thing that IO think might be related is that I disabled indexing of C drive but I later found that it was not a good idea and changed it back to indexing enabled.

Performance :: Maximize / Minimizing Windows Is Not Working?

Feb 23, 2016

I have a problem with my Win10 laptop and the best way to describe it (i think!), is that the minimize/maximizing of windows is not behaving as expected.

For example: sometimes I am unable to maximize a window properly, it seems to maximize, but not come to the front of the open windows. so if I have a browser open, and try to maximize MsWord, the word window maximizes, but sits behind the browser so I then have to minimize the browser.

ALSO sometimes even this doesn't work as for some reason a window will change its position to off the screen so the only way to maximize it (without ending the program and re-starting), is to hover over the taskbar icon, right click the needed window and hit maximize.

Lenovo ThinkPad S3 Yoga 14 (with NVIDIA 940M) Clean Install - Blank Screen When Maximizing Apps

Aug 12, 2015

I have a new Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 14 with the NVIDIA 940M discrete graphics option, and after a clean install of Windows 10, maximising pretty much any application results in a blank (and faintly flickering) screen.

I got my unit about a week before Windows 10 was released, and intentionally didn't use it much for that first week. Then, shortly after release, I downloaded Win10 as an ISO using Microsoft's own tools, wrote this to a DVD, then booted the laptop using an external USB drive, carrying out a completely clean install (and blowing away the 8.1 restore partition, which in hindsight might have been a mistake). I allowed Win10 to install all drivers, then went to the Lenovo site for anything missing. End result is that pretty much any application (excluding the Edge browser) blanks the screen when maximised.

After that, I went back to 8.1 - again with a clean install due to no longer having a restore partition, and documented the steps taken this time:

Installed 8.1 from downloaded ISO written to DVD, via USB DVD drive
Ensured unit was offline
Installed latest Intel HD Graphics 5500 drivers 6.16.00.3174
Tested maximising applications, no issues
For each of the last three releases of the NVIDIA drivers (in case there was a problem with a particular release), being 352.30, 353.30, and 353.62:
> Installed the driver

[Code] ....

End result is a fully working 8.1 install - no problem with maximising applications.

I then disconnected from the network and did an in-place upgrade to Windows 10, again documenting the steps taken:

Immediately after installation, there were no Intel drivers and no NVIDIA drivers installed
Display was using Microsoft Basic Display Adapter only
Maximising an app instantly blanked the screen - interesting given the lack of vendor-specific display drivers installed at this point...
Connected laptop to network again and allowed Win10 to install all updates (including drivers)
On restarting, drivers were automatically present for Intel HD Graphics 5500 and NVIDIA 940M
Testing maximising an application again blanked the screen
As a test, the 940M was disabled via device manager and all GeForce drivers uninstalled
Testing maximising an application again blanked the screen

I've tried a further Windows 10 clean install since the above, but with the same result - doesn't seem to matter regarding the installation order of drivers, etc, or if I manually download these vs letting Win10 or Lenovo's system update application install them...

Plugging in an external display via HDMI shows no such issues, e.g. maximising applications is fine. If the display is mirrored, the internal screen still flickers with maximised applications.

On talking to Lenovo support yesterday, the response was that this "is a Windows 10 problem" and that I "should contact Microsoft" for a resolution...

I know I can go back to a clean Win8.1 install, but would much rather be on Win10.

Performance :: Slow Boot Time On SSD And Slow Desktop Icons Loading

Aug 6, 2015

I'm using an Intel SSD 240GB 520 series. Always loading very fast, i.e., about 8 seconds from cold boot.

Since windows 10 is installed, boot time is about 20 seconds and desktop icons take some time to refresh and load their images.

Regarding the boot time: I've narrowed it down the an unexplained read/write access on my external HDD eSATA which is used for backups, though currently all backup process are stopped.

When I remove / turn off my external HDD, boot time is about 8 seconds. I can't figure out why all of a sudden it required this access to this HDD.

As for the slow icon refresh.. how to fix this.

Slow On Restart

Aug 7, 2015

I have recently just upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 8 via the recommended way. However, I have noticed it take a bit longer to start up and restart than Windows 8, it's like I have gone back to Win Vista or 7.

I personally would have performed a Clean Install of Windows 10 if there was a legal ISO for download but in saying that..... I bought my Laptop with Windows 8 pre-installed and wouldn't quite know how that would work performing a clean install anyway with out knowing my Windows 8 Product key as it is not visible on the Laptop. Not to mention that with it being a manufacturer OEM it probably wouldn't work using a legal ISO download. I didn't even get a Windows 8 installation DVD with my Laptop so had to make a Backup DVD.

So I'm thinking if no joy I shall just go back to my Windows 7. It would be a shame really because I really like the whole layout with Windows 10..... It's cleaner and crisper.

Performance :: Slow Shut Down

Feb 23, 2016

I'm a huge fan of the Windows 10, I love it, however recently I've gotten my first glimpse of the buggy side. The computer (pretty decent) is taking a very very long time to shut down. I just let it be, maybe update or something, however it kept doing it. After a few days I checked the event viewer, and I had quite a few of errors.

The main error (that I think, I'm no computer expert) that is causing this domino effect is a distributed error, CLSID and APPID. I've tried many solutions out there, and none seem to work.

Computer Extremely Slow?

Feb 12, 2016

Upon start up my computer is extremely slow and I get this message "cannot connect to Windows service". I can't open any of my documents or connect to google chrome. If I let it sit for about 10 minutes I can access google chrome and my files. I have taken the computer into the local computer fix it shop and they said there were a couple of broken registry paths, no malware and everything ran fine for them. The first couple of time I used the computer after getting it back home it worked great but now I'm back to square one. This is extremely frustrating.

Slow Start And Shutdown

Dec 4, 2015

W7 used to be fairly slow to start, about 2 minutes, but it shut down pretty quickly. Since "upgrading " to W10 my PC takes about 3 minutes to boot and even longer to shut down. Unless I can leave it, I usually just switch it off after about 30 seconds.

In other forums I have heard reports of boot times ranging from super fast (15-30 seconds) to funereal (5 - 10 minutes and then some). How to speed this up?

I was thinking that a clean re-install would be the best solution, but since this was the free upgrade, I don't have a copy to re-install. Maybe do a clean re-install of W7 and let MS upgrade it again (maybe!)
