Start Menu Not Working After Update
May 2, 2015
For those of you who can't get the Windows Start menu in build 10074 to appear or work when you UPDATE from build 10061 it WILL work if you revert back first to build 10049 and then update.
Activate windows and re-boot -- now it will work. Ensure Windows is activated after the re-boot but activate BEFORE reboot.
(Another good reason for keeping loads of backup images).
You can also now hide system icons again as before too. Don't forget to clean up disk space by using Disk cleanup in properties in file manager -- you can get rid of Windows.old if you don't want to revert back again --in any case I think it's better to RESTORE a previous version from a backup image if you must restore windows.

Yesterday morning after booting my computer, I experience the "your start menu isn't working" bug. I contacted Microsoft support and they still do not have a fix for this well-known failure. I checked my Update History and saw that an automatic update had been installed. Restoring from my last restore point resolved the problem. The culprit was "Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3140741)".

The menu bar stopped working after I updated the Windows 10 today.
It was working in the past few days (since I upgraded from Windows 7) but after I rebooted the system when I click on the menu icon it does not open.

The Windows 10 start menu has stopped working. If I click on the Start button, nothing happens. I did a repair install and that corrected the problem for a few days. The problem has returned. No start menu. All updates have been installed.

I recently installed Windows 10. I had this problem where explore.exe kept restarting. My friend had this problem too. He told me to create a new user. So I did. He also said to go to "c:usersold user" and copy everything from there to save my stuff. It was about 50 gbs so I did folder by folder.
When I goto Appdata, I copied everything from the old user onto the new one. But I accidentally deleted almost everything in Local. Now, the start menu isn't working and Windows Update isn't either. When I click on the start menu, nothing happens. I do have a system restore from before I deleted it. Should I restore it?
As I am typing this, I am running sfc /scannow
Got an error " Windows Resource Protection could not preforom the requested operation."

I'm looking at precisely this error message, in a blue box, on a friend's Samsung XE500T1C after an upgrade, via GWX, to Windows 10. The only option is to "Sign out now". Needless to say repeated log outs and log ins have not resolved the issue. Also the Windows Search/Cortana box doesn't work. I would suggest a Reset Install but, without the Start menu to get to Settings, I can find no other way to get to where one needs to be to do a Reset Install.

I upgraded to Windows 10 about a month ago. Two days ago my computer is all the sudden automatically downloading some. Massive update that took a long time and rebooted my computer without prompting me.
After the download was complete I was able to use my computer seemingly as normal, but upon the next restart, the start menu wouldn't open, and the mouse wouldn't click on any of the icons. I tried a restart and got two pop up error messages saying something like "Windows failed to start properly." I tried a hard reboot a coupe times, same thing.
Google searched the problem, found this and followed the steps: How to fix Windows 10 start-up problems - Blackscreen, Bootloop, Infinite Loading [HD 60FPS] - YouTube
No luck. Now every time I boot up my computer it goes to the "automatic repair screen."
I have tried every option available from the "automatic repair screen" menu, including System Restore: because I just downloaded Windows 10, I had no restore points. System Image Recovery: it says have no image to recover). Start Up Repai: tells me Windows can't repair the problem. Command Prompt: I've been able to get in there but I don't really know what to do once there (tried what was suggested in the video above, no luck, everything was already set to zero) Startup Settings:WAS working, I was able to start up in Safemode once, still couldn't click anything and start menu still wouldn't work. Now when I click on Startup Settings and click the restart button to get to the Startup options it just brings me back to the "automatic repair screen" ...I think I've rebooted so many times at this point that my computer can't reboot without taking me there.
I've even tried the "reset this PC" option multiple times and every time it starts to reset, gets to 1% or 2% and then I get an error message saying something went wrong and the PC can't be reset.

So my Surface 3 updated itself yesterday, and when I woke up today the majority of the icons I had pinned to my taskbar and my start menu are gone. I've been able to find and pin programmes like "Weather" back to the start menu, but others have completely disappeared, most frustrating of all is Edge.
I can open Edge if I open Cortana and select a news item. When I do that Edge opens full screen, but doesn't deposit an icon on the task bar, so I can't select it. Also, when I swipe in from the left or choose Task View, Edge does not show as an available programme. Changing in and out of tablet mode does nothing.
Also, my PC is just fine.

When I start my computer, my Start Menu Search sometimes gets stuck in a start up or searching loop. The start menu itself works if I am just using my mouse to click icons. The issue is hitting the Windows button on my keyboard and typing. What is strange is that when this happens, if I log out then log in again, it starts up fine. While this is a workaround, I would like to solve the problem that is causing the problem.
I've tried re-indexing my entire computer based on a similar post I found here, but that did not work. Also - searching in a general Explorer window works fine showing the Windows Indexing does not appear to be the problem.

I occasionally (but frequently enough that it is noticeable) get an unresponsive start menu. When this happens Win+P for display switching also does not work. The start menu starts working after a reboot and only after a reboot. Obviously this gets annoying because of all the windows I have to reopen. What I've tried when the start menu stops working:
1. sfc /scannow - this doesn't show any errors
2. Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml"} - the process finishes but the start menu doesn't start working anyway
I really hate restarting the PC when this happens.

My start menu stopped working several weeks ago and I have been trying all the suggestions found of the various forums with the exception of reloading Windows 10. It looks like Microsoft should be responsible for publishing a solution to this problem realizing how many people are having the same trouble.

I upgraded to Windows 10 from 8.1 about two weeks ago. It worked fine for a few days then the problems began. When I click on the start menu button, I get a critical error message saying "the start menu isn't working; we'll try to fix it the next time you sign in."
I clicked the shut down button attached to the error message and shut the system down. I restarted and went to my desktop again. I tried the start menu button and received the same error message. I was able to log on to my son's desktop on the same computer. The start menu works on his desktop. I ran the SFC Scan and received the message that there weren't any integrity violations.
I then tried to revert back to Windows 8.1 from the settings menu. I received the following error message: WDF_Violation. It restarted my computer, but could not take Windows 10 off and put Windows 8.1 back on. Every day something new happens. Now I cannot shut the computer off. I use the power button and select shut down. It attempts to shut down but it brings me back to the login window. I can't get rid of Windows 10, can't get Windows 8.1 back. I'm stuck with a crippled Windows 10.

My laptop is LENOVO G510. It came with windows 8 single language. I upgraded to windows 8.1 single language a year ago. I updated it to windows 10 home by triggering the update. The upgrade went successfully. But the problem now is the start button, applications in the taskbar(only right click) and icons on the taskbar on the right side(time, battery, wifi etc) are not working. They work if I click them after a gap of ten minutes. But if I click them for a second time immediately, they won't work.
I got a message box showing "startmenu and cortana are not working, it will be fixed the next time you sign in". When I sign out and sign in, there is no change.

I upgraded to Windows 10 from 7 and I notice that some of the "Start Menu" functions do not work.
For example:
- When I use "Pin to Start" nothing gets pinned.
- When I try to use "Don't show in this list" under the "Most used" section the app still remains showing.
- When I go under "Settings > Personalization > Start" screen and turn OFF "Show most used apps" this section is still visible under the "Start Menu".
How I can fix these issues and get the "Start Menu" working properly again?
