My start menu stopped working several weeks ago and I have been trying all the suggestions found of the various forums with the exception of reloading Windows 10. It looks like Microsoft should be responsible for publishing a solution to this problem realizing how many people are having the same trouble.
View 5 RepliesI got home today and went to open the start menu on my computer, but it didn't respond. Neither does the search menu, nor Windows Edge, or Groove Music or the Windows 10 video program. All of my other programs on the task bar open when I click them, and when I right click the start menu button I am given a list of options, but not ability to access any of the application that I don't have on my task bar or desktop. I tried running POWERSHELL and sfc /scannow, but it found not integrity violations. So now I am not sure what next.
View 4 RepliesSometime in December, 2015 my keyboard Windows button and my task bar Start menu and Search stopped working and without the ability to START I lost all the tiles. Windows has now become very cumbersome to use.
I have given up on Windows 10 and it's too late to recover Windows 7 (Windows 7 was great). Really wish this had not happened as I have been a Windows user since version 3.1. I guess I posted this here because I'm frustrated with the problem and need to air it out. Must buy a new PC.
So yesterday I was just watching some videos on youtube and then the screen flashed for a second and started everything started acting up. I restarted my computer and since then, the start menu, notifications and all apps like the xbox app and store app no longer work. I did Recovery hoping it would fix everything but didn't. What can i do?
View 2 RepliesNow, for some odd reason, on my computer, the sound, start menu and cortana stopped working and I can't even get past the sign in menu without it telling me to sign out so they can "fix" this problem which I've done 3 times now so I have no clue if I screwed up this computer or what.
It started with the sound first, then the start menu so I decided to restart my computer manually (which was a bad idea, apparently) and I guess Cortana just died on me when I got back on.
Also, my computer is on Windows 10 Pro Preview still.
Two weeks ago the startup menu and cortana stopped working on my laptop. When I click on the startup menu icon (the little window icon), I get an error message that tells me to sign out, that windows functions aren't working, and that the computer will attempt to fix the issues when I sign back in.
When I click on the internet icon in the taskbar, nothing happens (something should pop up on the side that lets me choose wifi).
I have tried several fixes I found on google, but none have worked. I have tried running powershell from the command prompt (with admin privileges). I tried to look up cortana and search in my task manager to try to disable them, but they weren't there.
I was hoping a future windows update would fix the problem, but my laptop won't update. At the moment I am considering uninstalling the most recent updates, as this happened a day or so after installing updates.
The start button on windows 10 has stopped working for me. It came right after I installed a new graphics card though in the days before I had noticed strange stuff like when I searched for an app and clicked on its icon within the start menu nothing would happen. File explorer, settings etc stills works but are very slow.

I have called Microsoft tech support and chatted online five times but they have not been able to resolve the problem. Windows 10 worked alright for over a month, but then this problem occurred. I believe there was a Windows 10 update around that time.

I downloaded a batch file from a forum site the last time and it worked, so i used it again. My system is now working again. As this appears to be an issue that Microsoft cannot resolve I am now going to turn off automatic updates.

When im using local admin account, start menu is working. if im using network account start menu is not working. laptop is joined in our domain.

View 1 RepliesI recently installed Windows 10. I had this problem where explore.exe kept restarting. My friend had this problem too. He told me to create a new user. So I did. He also said to go to "c:usersold user" and copy everything from there to save my stuff. It was about 50 gbs so I did folder by folder.
When I goto Appdata, I copied everything from the old user onto the new one. But I accidentally deleted almost everything in Local. Now, the start menu isn't working and Windows Update isn't either. When I click on the start menu, nothing happens. I do have a system restore from before I deleted it. Should I restore it?

Got an error " Windows Resource Protection could not preforom the requested operation."
I'm looking at precisely this error message, in a blue box, on a friend's Samsung XE500T1C after an upgrade, via GWX, to Windows 10. The only option is to "Sign out now". Needless to say repeated log outs and log ins have not resolved the issue. Also the Windows Search/Cortana box doesn't work. I would suggest a Reset Install but, without the Start menu to get to Settings, I can find no other way to get to where one needs to be to do a Reset Install.

The issue is hitting the Windows button on my keyboard and typing.What is strange is that when this happens, if I log out then log in again, it starts up fine. Method 1 : Try to run a System File Checker (SFC) scan to check for any file corruption. SFC scan will scan for corrupt system files on the computer and repair them.
Press Windows key + X, click Command Prompt (Admin).In the Command Prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
sfc /scannow
If the issue still exists, try the next method.
Method 2 : Check if the Application Identity is started and running.
- Open Run from Windows task manager as before.
- Type SERVICES.MSC and hit enter.
- Find Application Identity.
- Right click on that and select Start.
If the issue still exists, refer to the following method.
Method 3 : Run the following command in an elevated Command prompt and check if it works:
Press Windows key + X, click Command Prompt (Admin). In the Command Prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER : ren %windir%System32AppLockerPlugin*.* *.bak but nothing.
So, today my win10 64bit pro decided that searching from the start menu will no longer work.
No matter what I search for after I push start, it just keeps searching and nothing shows up.
I occasionally (but frequently enough that it is noticeable) get an unresponsive start menu. When this happens Win+P for display switching also does not work. The start menu starts working after a reboot and only after a reboot. Obviously this gets annoying because of all the windows I have to reopen.What I've tried when the start menu stops working:
1. sfc /scannow - this doesn't show any errors
2. Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml"} - the process finishes but the start menu doesn't start working anyway
I really hate restarting the PC when this happens.
Been happening alot lately I can't open my start menu it just stops working. Only a restart or log off works.
View 7 RepliesFor those of you who can't get the Windows Start menu in build 10074 to appear or work when you UPDATE from build 10061 it WILL work if you revert back first to build 10049 and then update.
Activate windows and re-boot -- now it will work. Ensure Windows is activated after the re-boot but activate BEFORE reboot.
(Another good reason for keeping loads of backup images).
You can also now hide system icons again as before too. Don't forget to clean up disk space by using Disk cleanup in properties in file manager -- you can get rid of Windows.old if you don't want to revert back again --in any case I think it's better to RESTORE a previous version from a backup image if you must restore windows.
I am using Windows 10, and my start menu stop working for me. I have run the following commend in Powershell.
sfc /scannow
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)AppXManifest.xml"}
It fixed the problem temporally, however the problem keep coming back when each time I shut down or restart my laptop.
