I am using Windows 10 for around 2 days now. But today my computer freezed while playing a game, so i restarted my computer and when i logged in, the start menu,notification menu and metro apps would not open anymore.
View 9 RepliesIve updated my 8.1 today and now my start menu and indeed any metro apps wont start (ironic).If I create a new user their start menu is ok. I'm trying to revert back to my 8.1 installation but I cant because I cannot get to the revert option as it lives in the metro settings page NOT the standard control panel (why oh why are there two places with differing options, though in this case if it was all metro I couldnt access anything).
I cant revert using the new user as then it tells me I cant revert because I have added a user since upgrading? I cant start anything metro..I cant start anything from the right click start menu..I cant right click in file explorer (which I have to start via win-r) so its hard to get anything running as administrator..its a total fail of an upgrade for me.
I am getting my 3 year old Dell Vostro V131 laptop up and running. I bought Windows 10, installed it and configured everything without too much of a problem - except for this little issue.
Just as the OS installed, the touchpad just allowed me to move the cursor and tap to click - not much of a surprise, as it ran on stock Windows drivers. I got the touchpad drivers for my laptop model from Dell's site (was labeled as a Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 driver, but there was none for 10, so I just used that). The scroll and zoom gestures worked fine in file explorer, MS Office, Skype, Spotify, Chrome, control panel and desktop. However, there is no reaction from Edge, modern/metro apps (like settings, weather) and the start menu!
I'm pretty much stuck right now. Here are the things I tried:
1. Configuring the touchpad in Windows settings - not possible, as the OS doesn't classify my touchpad as a "precision touchpad", and therefore doesn't allow to configure any gestures.
2. Installing a driver from Synaptics' website (obviously with the Dell one uninstalled) - doable, but it doesn't change anything at all; the touchpad is still listed as "PS/2 pointing device" in the device manager, no gestures are available, no driver is listed in "Programs and features", and no icon is to be seen in the app tray.
3. Same as 2, but first uninstalling the generic driver via device manager - not effective, as the driver uninstall requires a restart, and after the restart Windows installs the generic driver back.
What I thought about: This is obviously Microsoft's fault, as only their new, Windows-10-modern-interface-touch-controllable-minimalistic-cool-looking software faces this issue. Could I, by any chance, fool Windows 10 into thinking i have a "precision touchpad"? Registry editing comes to my mind, but I have no clue how to find such an entry if it exists.

As you can see, despite its name, it does not have a tab for "Start Menu". I remember that Preview versions of Windows 10 had a "Start Menu" tab. Did they just remove at the last moment? And how I change Start Menu options without that tab?
Everything is accessible through the "all apps" section, but I'm adding important items onto the metro screen, and while I'm currently doing this by dragging-and-dropping I'm hoping there is another way (as I will not be able to do this with apps running under Symantec Workspace Virtualization unless I do global captures. If you are not familiar with this product, don't worry about it, you don't need to be to answer my question.). Perhaps adding items can be accomplished by placing shortcuts in some special folder somewhere, or editing some file? an alternative way to drag-and-dropping items onto the metro screen.

Not sure if I've done this in the course of hacking the registry but I can no longer pin anything to Start Menu by right clicking on an .exe in the File Explorer and choosing 'Pin to Start' from the context menu. I don't get an error message but nothing happens.
Also, when I install a program it will create a folder in the Start Menu, as normal, but any shortcuts to an .exe are not shown, only links to the manual, notes, etc. However, the shortcuts to the .exe are actually being created in
C:UsersNusAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms or C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms
Turned on 'Most used' and can pin programs that appear on the list. However, not all programs used are appearing on list. It seems like only programs that were installed before this behaviour started are showing up.
I am using windows 10 since a few weeks now and already encountered a startmenu bug earlier on. This was because of the Teamspeak Overlay which caused the startmenu to be completely unuseable. Ive removed this plugin and ever since everything worked perfectly, until a few days ago.
I received a complete system update which brought me from the RTM version of Win10 to the Build 10532. Apparently im back to the insider preview. This time for windows 10 Professional.
Ever since ms forced me to install this update my startmenu is completely unresponsive and doesnt work anymore.
I also uninstalled avast already and tried to disable dev mode in PS with this:

I recently installed Windows 10 Home using the iso. It was fine but after sometime, the start and metro apps had stopped working. I thought that re-install would do the trick. So I reformatted C: and installed Windows 10 again hoping it wouldn't come again. But now after two weeks... the exact same thing happened. Start, Action Center, Settings, Search... not working. Tried the powershell command, didn't work. Also I cannot create a new user because the settings app crashes... Start wouldn't come up at all. Metro Apps like Calculator, Store and all, they just simply crash after showing the splash screen for a second. I can't do another reformat...

View 4 RepliesI made clean Windows 10 (build 10240) install five times, and five times after some time my Start menu had vanished. Simply it doesn't open neither by Win key nor by mouse click on Window icon. Now I won't go into 6th clean install as it is clear that after a while Start menu would disappear again. So this is not way to go.

In the meantime between working and non-working Start I didn't make any radical system changes nor user hacks to system so the problem is all the more surprising for me. Any way that would bring my menu back (since without it the OS control is significantly diminished) or maybe someone other had met the same problem (on final build) too.
I've looked through and ran various troubleshooters I was able to find regarding the Start Menu which refuses to open since I upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. Needless to say, none of them worked, so here I am.
The problem, however, runs deeper than just the Start Menu. Basically, everything on the taskbar that's not a pinned program, doesn't work. I can right-click the task bar just fine and the menu opens and I have the options to open the Control Panel, Task Manager, Power Shell etc. However, right-clicking any of the pinned programs does nothing. On my other systems, if I do that I get some options (e.g. if I right-click Visual Studio, I get a menu which enables me to open one of the recent solutions). I know there is an option that I need to set up to enable this feature, and I have it enabled, but the context menu that should display this simply doesn't open. Consequently, I can't pin any new programs to the taskbar, or un-pin old ones.
Furthermore, one of the tutorials suggested I try enabling and then disabling a full screen start menu through settings. However, I noticed that no matter what I do, the system won't remember that I toggled the full screen start menu button. I set it to ON, exit settings, re-enter settings, and it shows as being OFF again.
Next, clicking the date and time on the taskbar should open up a monthly calendar. Well, not for me. The calendar is completely unresponsive. Right-clicking the notification in the tray shows the option to open the action center, but the action center doesn't open.
If I try play a game, and press anything, the game minimizes and the start menu opens instead. It stops me from playing any game because its like when something takes up the full screen, it binds everything to the windows key or something.

View 9 RepliesWhere the start menu doesn't open when its clicked on. I have seen other posts with this issue where its an issue with personalization settings under ms-settings. I am unable to open Ms-settings because I receive the error "Invalid value for registry". I tried opening it from the notifications button but that doesn't launch at all. I am trying to avoid reinstalling the system.
I have tried dism /online /cleanup-image:
/restorehealth sfc /scannow
Ran multiple different virus scanners.
This computer is running Build 10240

View 2 RepliesAs the title says, the start menu wasn't opening so I ran SFC /scannow that found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. I then ran RestoreHealth but I got a message saying, "Source file cannot be found". I restart, Start Menu works again but still have corrupt files after an SFC scan. I recently did a clean install of Windows 10 after some non-related issues. CBS log is attached. I'm having trouble determining the problem from the log file.

View 1 RepliesStrange, my start menu left click that used to open the coloured start menu with 'tiles' has stopped working. I can only right click to access the 'grey' listing. If I do left click I see the blue spinning wheel for a couple of seconds but nothing appears.
Also the icon for 'New Notifications' has stopped as well, when clicked I used to see a slide out popup asking me if I would recommend W10 to a friend but not now. If I right click to 'Open Action Centre' nothing happens.
So, this last update seems to have killed the start menu again. After reboot, it might work, it might not, but not too long there-after it just quits working all-together if it was working before. Same with search and Volume toggle. Dang! Mines an AMD machine which is perhaps a factor.
View 9 RepliesSince the latest 'Update' a little while ago, I cannot open the Start Menu or get to the Control Panel or even Shut the PC down and I've also lost all the Sound.
Just before it all went wrong (Again!) I saw a flag about an 'Immersive Control Panel' which sounds like it could be the Problem?
I do not know what happened, but I lost some file associations, such as opening .torrent files and magnetic links with utorrent and text files (.ini, .txt etc.) with Notepad++. Additionally, Start Menu and tray options, such as volume slider and wi-fi menu are not opening anymore. Settings starts, though. I already tried to apply that CSSEmerg67758.diagcab fix, but it didn't work. I can't perform a system restore as well, I get this error: ....

They do nothing when I click on them.They are working for other users on the same PC.Haven't updated anything except Java. how to reset them for the ADMIN User. For whatever reason, only the admin user is affective.
