Switch To Headphones Without Having To Change Control Panel Sound Settings
Mar 26, 2016
My default configuration is powered speakers connected via the optical output on the ZXR. So in control panel, the S/PDIF is my default device. I'd like to be able to also switch to headphones without having to change control panel sound settings. Is there a configuration that enables me to do this? It seems as if I can't have the s/pdif output my default if I want to use headphones. I'm on Windows 10 with latest software updates.I switched to using the analog outs from the ZXR and not taking advantage of the D/A converters built into my powered speakers (Vanatoo). Not the optimal situation, but it allows me to switch from speakers to headphones without having to go through Control Panel gyrations.

Installed Win10 and have the following problems.
1) I have no sound; Sound icon on task bars says "No audio Output Device Installed." When I run troubleshooter, it says Troubleshooting couldn't detect the problem.
2) Control Panel: When I click on control panel it opens, however, it shuts down in 15 seconds.
I'm not a techno person. Dummy me didn't back up before I installed and now I can kick myself.

In windows 7, when headphones were plugged into the jack on the front of the machine it would automatically switch to the headphones and mute the speakers. If you unplugged them, it would enable the speakers. How would I go about enabling this on Windows 10?

I recently updated to Win 10, and the first thing I noticed was that the sound settings were weird. Both speakers and headphone sounds work perfectly fine, but they don't automatically switch when I plug/unplug the headphones. I have to manually go into sound and set one device or another to default.

Navigating to Settings > Personalization > Themes > Theme Settings, we get to the Personalization window for Themes same as on Win 7. In the window it states "Click a theme to change the desktop background, color, and sounds all at once."
However, the icons normally at the bottom of the window to change those settings are missing. All I can do is save the theme (right click).
(window capture missing icons)
(these are the icons I'd expect to see)

Today, I reset my computer after struggling to get Kaspersky Internet Security reinstalled. After the reset, I was able to get it installed, but I have run into another issue (surprise, surprise). Sound does not output through headphones as it should.
The drivers are up to date (IDT High Definition Audio Codec and AMD High Definition Audio Device) as they should be. Windows even detects that my headphones are connected, but sound does not go through them unless I use the sound control panel to test the audio. Look at the screenshots for further details. It lists my headphones as the default communication device, and where it lists the speakers/HP option, it lists that as the default device. I cannot list the communication headphones as the default device, only default communication device.
Audio works through the speakers. Audio goes through the speakers even with headphones connected. The only time audio comes through the headphones as it should is when I test audio through them in the control panel. The headphones work just fine, and this issue did not exist before I reset my computer.

Yesterday Windows 10 updated and now my Aune T1 Mk2 USB DAC is no longer working. It shows up in the device manager and is recognized and the audio is switched to be playing through it, however there is not sound whatsoever in my headphones. I have tried a different pair of headphones and there was no change, still no sound.

Now that I've got Win10,, I was looking around and clicking on stuff to see what was under the hood, I found that you can get to the Old Control Panel like in Win 7, problem is I don't remember how I got there. I don't particularly care for the new Settings menu in 10 but I guess if there is't enough complaints about it, I guess were stuck with it. I do like 10, there are some issues but just like with new stuff, you get bugs.

Sound comes through perfectly fine on my laptop's built-in speakers. However, when plugging my headphones into the 3.5mm headset jack, there is no sound whatsoever. The system recognizes that my headset is plugged in. In fact, the microphone on my headset functions perfectly when plugged in, but the headphones themselves are outputting no sound.
I tested the headphones on other computers and devices, and they work. In Device Manager, the device is listed as "Realtek High Definition Audio". However, the only sound device listed in Control Panel is "DTS Audio Control Panel".
I've tried uninstalling the audio device from Device Manager, and then reinstalling the driver from Realtek's website. However, this is met with the exact same results... no sound through the headphones, and "DTS Audio Manager" is installed in the Control Panel instead of Realtek HD Audio Manager.
If I navigate to Control Panel -> Sound -> Playback, "Headphones" is not listed as a device. Instead, Speakers/Headphones is listen as the sole device. Also, I ran DirectX Diagnostic Tool, and it returned absolutely no errors.

this small problem started when my control panel wouldn't open, when I try it's like my entire desktop gets refreshed (black flicker) and half the app icons in the notification are disappear with no sign of the control panel opening.
I have looked around and found a couple "solutions" but none work tried this in cmd (admin) "sfc /scannow" which ends with no issues found.then tried this which also found nothing.

So I finally just tried a reset of my computer removing all personal files, apps and settings but that didn't work still have the same problem but now I have more problems!....my audio has stopped working, the icon has the speaker with the little red circle and white cross and when I hover over it it says "The Audio Service is not running." when I click on it it opens up a troubleshoot window which doesn't work it goes through the process and end with a "Not Fixed" and when I click the "Explore additional options" it does that stupid screen refresh thing like when trying to open the control panel, and after I reinstalled my VPN my internet wont work.

I have an HP laptop, and my sound card is (displayed using PCIutils for Windows):
Code:
Intel Corporation 7 Series / C210 Series
and I am finding difficulties in getting stereo sound from analogical headphones (plugged in with 3.5mm jack). Drivers downloaded from HP or Realtex do not work, drivers supplied by Windows (although they are Realtek drivers as well) sometimes work, I mean: speakers and headphones are shown together at the mixer, and sound from headphones is not stereo. I then go to device manager, audio input and output, and uninstall "Speakers/ Headphones". I then reboot with my headphones plugged in, and, after that, the sound is stereo, and (IIRC) the mixer distinguishes between headphones and speakers.
But then things get broken back soon: one time, the windows updated the sound driver, and no stereo sound again. I uninstalled the device, rebooted, and stereo back. Then I unplugged the headphones, and windows said that no speakers were found: I restarted the audio device, speakers were found again, but stereo broken again.

I am unable to find my Control Panel today. I see the words control panel when I right click on the menu after clicking on the start button. But nothing happens. It does not open. I have been researching it all day but to no avail. I am using an Acer laptop and I updated to Windows 10 last July. I have had this control panel until today. How to restore it?

When I had Windows 7, I put a shortcut to Control Panel in the startup folder (I used to need it to start at startup). Now I am on Windows 10 and it still starts at startup. I deleted from the folder (looked up where it was) and checked in task manager if it was set to run at startup but it wasn't there.

I find the control panel is a bit awkward to find and usually just luck that I find it on advanced setting for something to other. Is there any way to have the full control panel (not that settings nonsense) on the start menu, pin or otherwise?
I can pin it to the task bar if it's open, but I like a clean task bar, not cluttered with stuff that should be in the start menu.
