View 1 RepliesMy taskbar is missing and my icons on the desktop are missing as well the background is dark ....
View 1 RepliesIt's been a few days now since icons aren't showing everywhere including Desktop (really bugs me, this one), Taskbar (Not actually disappeared, but deformed), and File Explorer. I did things like calling Task Manager up and end the process of explorer.exe and run it again, no luck. I restarted Windows, yielded no results. I also tried turning the machine off and on again, to no avail.
Here are some screenshots regarding the problem I am facing.
While Desktop and Explorer are not working as well as they should, Start Menu and Tablet Mode appear to be quite fine by themselves.
My machine is running Windows 10 Home Edition, not Insider Preview. I don't know how to find the version/build numbers, but I'm positive it's the latest build available since I just checked Windows Update.
see the screenshot.
View 9 RepliesI think since the latest Windows 10 update some of my icons have a black background to them, sometimes they don't *update*.
What could be causing this? I've tried deleting the thumbnail cache using CCleaner and Disk Cleaner but that didn't seem to work.
According to all I have read there should be a Properties Icon shown when you right click a blank area of the Taskbar in W10. There should also be a Task View icon to the right of the Start icon. I have neither of these. If I right click the Taskbar (blank area) I get 4 options: 1. Show app icons. 2. Show all notification icons. 3. Show touch keyboard button. 4. Show language switcher. That's it but no Properties.
View 6 RepliesNo app icons will appear on the taskbar. They show fine in the Start menu, but are missing on the taskbar. It only includes apps, no installed programs are having this issue. This includes calculator, Edge, Xbox, etc. I tried rebuilding the icon cache from this tutorial, but it still didn't work. I've included a screenshot for reference.
View 2 RepliesI have had a problem on Windows 10. My icons for various applications (non stock) have gone missing. Many apps and games like Cities Skylines, Steam, Simcity have gone missing. They all have changed to either a globe or a blank paper icon. It has become very frustrating as I am used to looking at the icon and not actually reading the name. I have tried moving the apps from my HDD to an SSD and, nothing.
View 1 RepliesI have recently done an update. Now, my computer turns on fine. However the only taskbar icons I have from the extreme left is the windows 'start' image, then the cortana circle then the taskview rectangle.
From the extreme right I have the usual show desktop sliver, then a blank gap of around an inch where wifi / volume / clock should be then a rectangular speech bubble 'No new notifications' then the up arrow - which only shows a single grey square 'ELAN pointing device'.
That's it. There were several quick icons there prior. Edge, MFF, folders, ASUS update, Chrome etc. All gone.
Also, I can't actually access anything from the start window icon. Clicking it does nothing. When I hover / click it it turns red, but that's it.
All my usual desktop icons are there. I can use them but can't minimise anything. If I do minimise anything it vanishes. I can open it again via the task manager as they are still running but that's it.
The ONLY way to shut down my computer is to go to the ctrl + alt + del to the red screen and use the icons in the bottom right hand corner. I can sometimes right click on the start windows icon and it will pop up a black menu and one of the options is power / sleep / shutdown etc.
Today I upgraded my Win 7 PC to Win 10. Everything was fine 'till the installation finished and came up with my desktop. it loaded normally for a few moments then a black screen appeared with no taskbar nor the icons only cursor. I can access the Task manger and I tried terminating explorer.exe and restarting it but nothing changes.
View 1 RepliesEach and every time I boot up 2 of my computers, the desktop icon font color is black. I have to manually change them to white. I have tried looking on Google, tried resolving the problem myself to no avail. So,
Acer Aspire XC603G Desktop and Acer Aspire 5749 Laptop.
I'm currently running Build 10130. For some reason, when I view "All Apps" I have folders for my desktop apps, but nearly all of the icons for the apps themselves are missing.
I have tried the following solutions & none have fixed the problem:
SFC /scannow
DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth (I've run both of those alternatively 3X in a row - based on another thread)
Deleted the icon cache in my user folder
Run the Windows Troubleshooter for Windows Update
Created a new local account & logged in.
Enabled the Administrator account & logged in.
Did a repair install of Build 10130
When I navigate to C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms I can see everything and it's all just fine. For some reason the icons simple refuse to appear on the start screen.
I've checked the permissions on those folders and they appear to be fine.
I've tried right clicking on a program and selecting "pin to start" and nothing happens.
I've checked C:UsersmynameAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms as well and it seems to be fine, but still nothing changes.
How is Windows 10 creating the Start screen icons? Is there a way to force it to rebuild everything?
I was using my laptop at school, when my trackpad starts to glitch out, wherever I moved it it kept clicking and in the process did something to my taskbar; I had my desktop Icons showing on the taskbar (the desktop checkbox ticked in the 'toolbars' tab of the taskbar settings), and they were square Icons that were under my taskbar Icons, but then, after I ctrl+alt+del to stop the glitchy clicking, I went back and now my taskbar looks like this: [URL] ... the 'Desktop' Icons used to have alot more and they were square and slightly bigger than the taskbar icons.
View 3 RepliesI have successfully installed Windows 10 ("final') on three devices: One venerable notebook, one "media" desktop computer (in my living room) and my main desktop computer in my home office.
Unfortunately, I have encountered a strange phenomenon on my main work computer. I have set the taskbar icons to "large" and they are a "bearable" size. However, the desktop icons (which I don't display on the desktop) in the taskbar are TINY (!) - and I can't find any way to make them larger.
What make this strange is that there is NO disparity between the size of the App and desktop icons on the desktops of the other two machines. Am I missing a setting, or is this a "glitch"? Is there a workaround? It is really NOT acceptable - a "step backward" form Windows 7, in my opinion.
My desktop icons have disappeared, the text associated with the icons is still present, the graphic images are missing. Clicking on the text still activates the application.
View 1 RepliesHow do I change the color of the taskbar, and how do I remove the arrows from the desktop icons.
View 2 RepliesOnly once in a blue moon do I see clean shortcut icons without arrows. It's almost always shortcut icons overlaid with black squares on the lower left corners. I had checked the Windows Registry against the steps in the article twice to find that they were all correct.
View 1 RepliesI recently made some changes in the registry to make the shortcut icons go away as per a tutorial written by Daniel Rubinho in Windows Central. 2 days later i see black boxes around the shortcuts i have on desktop. Why this happened. How to Remove this?
View 2 RepliesSo I have a bit of a problem where my screen flashes, I instantly thought it was display drivers so I uninstalled them only to worsen the problem, the computer restarted with a black screen which later turned into a desktop screen with no icons and a flashing screen (can't click anything or even load up the start menu with the windows key). I put it into safe mode but it does the same thing. Nothing works except task manager and i can't run task from it or it will exit out, system restore doesn't fix the issue either. Computer is a lenovo k450 i5-4440 8gb ram 1tb hdd with an evga gtx 760.
View 1 RepliesI just installed Win10 and had everything set up like I wanted. I rebooted and now I have a black desktop. I can see my icons and the taskbar changes colors to the theme I picked. The lock/log screen shows the pic I chose. I have tried everything and I can't get my theme to show on my desktop.
View 1 RepliesBelow is the current issue I am experiencing with Windows 10. My computer has been running normally for days after having installed the software, only while booting today have I been experiencing this issue. I have tried doing restarts and fully turning the computer off, nothing seems to work. Also the hidden files do not normally show up on my desktop.
View 9 RepliesThe icons on Life at a Glance (the panel you see when clicking the windows key) suddenly disappeared a couple of weeks ago. URL...
View 8 RepliesI did a Windows Update 3-4 days ago ever since my desktop background goes black at random. It also goes black if I click a desktop icon or if I use the highlight tool on my mouse. When I was doing the update it got stuck on restarting and I had to force shutdown my computer. I was thinking about using system restore.
View 1 RepliesI have Windows 10 Home and all of my icons have disappeared. I mean not only my desktop ones all of them I will include some screenshots. This happened when I used the Winfix option in the Systemcare 9 Pro app. It told me the I have something wrong with sticky notes, so I just clicked fix then all of my icons just disappeared, and it said the problem was fixed. I have tried running every troubleshooting method in the windows OS and I everything says everything is all fine.
My personal theory is that either there is a setting for this that I can change back or that I have a problem in the registry (I do not back it up frequently sadly so I cannot load a backup) or the problem lies in a corrupted file (I have used sfc /scannow and it says nothing is wrong). I also am unable to access the properties option (Whenever I right click the menu comes up but when I click properties it won't open).
Recently I have had the issue where some icons go missing. In the image below, its the mute icon however it appears elsewhere. May be related or not but my skype has suddendly stop showing special characters too.I have tried "Reset default fonts".
View 5 RepliesI have an issue with some icons in windows 10, some of them are not being displayed by windows.
View 9 RepliesI would like to select which pictures from a theme I would like to use for my background. To be more specific, I want to disable a few pictures. This used to be possible in Win 7/Win 8.1 by going to the Theme settings (in win 10: Personalize/Themes/Theme Settings), and clicking an icon called Desktop Background on the bottom of the page.
