Why Start Menu Folders Greyed Out
Aug 9, 2015Everything is greyed out. How do I fix this?

View 9 RepliesOn Windows 7 start menu you could have a folder such as EA Games and then sub folders within. For example a folder for tiger woods golf, a folder for say Fifa and so on. It seems on Windows 10 you can only have one folder level. I have tried creating sub folders but all the shortcuts within the sub folders all appear under the one top/master folder when actually viewing the start menu. Am I correct in this observation/restriction?

I am trying to move a folder/directory to Start Menu, but when I drag it onto the start menu, it just shows red circle with line through it... How do I add folders to start menu left side?
View 7 RepliesI have tried creating a folder in every known location to get an additional folder to show up in the start menu so I can throw some games and what not under it..I've tried creating a folder named "Games" in the following:
C:ProgramData
C:UsersmynameAppDataLocal
C:Program Files
C:Program Files (x86)
C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms
Apparently the 0-Z list doesn't read any of these directories, but I am baffled that my Nvidia driver created a folder and it shows up under "N" just fine...I'm assuming this is some type of regedit but I have no clue where to begin.
I was in my users folders & deleted them (Download, Favorites, Videos etc...)Then, i realized that my start menu which has option to "ON" to make them appear, got issue with link missing.I recreated all the forders by default with windows tools (regedit & i have all references created in reg %USERPROFILE%* & in my user folder)
So... i've tried a last attempt by, creating a new user, & create Start Menu Places & pushing the links etc but even with that, nothing done (looks like it's more for people getting grey menu on/off)HOW to retrieve the missing link from elements in start menu for :
- Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos.
All the others links are working :
- Homegroup, Network, Personal Folder, File Explorer, Settings, Power, All apps.
I read many people complain about the Start Menu on Windows 10, specifically about not being able to modify it like they could in Windows 7.
You actually can modify it, pretty easily. Simply open This PC, then click in the address bar and type "start menu". You can then go into Programs and create new folders, shortcuts, etc. And any shortcuts you create can be also pinned as a tile from the All Apps section. And you can have Cortana launch them too.
When I Installed Win 10, if I wanted to quickly access one of those 6 Win 10 PC 'Folders' (Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, Videos), I would just had to type in the folder in the start menu search box, press Enter and it would access the folder. As soon as I changed the folders' original location, this 'typing shortcut' did not work anymore.is it even possible to make typing shortcuts to folders or files in the search box? (i.e typing "x" for a specific folder named "y")
View 9 RepliesIn W7 I have created folders in the start menu so I can organize by topic. I can't figure out if/how to do that in W10.
View 9 RepliesHere's a screenshot of "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" dialog from a fresh clean install of Windows 10 Pro x64
As you can see, despite its name, it does not have a tab for "Start Menu". I remember that Preview versions of Windows 10 had a "Start Menu" tab. Did they just remove at the last moment? And how I change Start Menu options without that tab?
I've not got the 'Start Menu' tab in my 'Taskbar and Start Menu Properties' control panel (right-click on taskbar). I've seen screenshots on the web, but my Win 10 Pro doesn't have. How can I enable?
View 1 Replieswhen trying to use control panel most options are greyed out or do not respond
View 9 RepliesI don't know how it happened, but for some reason the wi-fi icon on my Acer laptop is now greyed out and when I click on the internet icon to display available connections, there's nothing there.
I'm attaching a screenshot ...
I can't do anything about it anymore because I can't even get past the blue login screen. This all happened when I decided I was going to download a game I used to play called Mabibogi, silly me, I should have checked if it was Windows 10 compatible, it's not. So now when I try to login, the bar to enter my password is greyed out, as well as the switch user and shut down buttons, I used to have a cursor showing up, and I have a Dell Inspiron 620.
View 9 RepliesI'm logged in an admin account and it's greyed out. I searched online and it seems some people have this issue as well but I couldn't find a solution.
View 9 RepliesUsing Win 10 Pro 64-bit. Under Windows Update advanced options --> Choose how updates are installed, the options drop down box is greyed out. I've tried all three (enable, disable, not configured) local group policy options for windows updates (with reboot each time) but the option I mentioned above stays grayed out. I'd like to know how it can be un-greyed out. It also says "some settings are managed by your organization" in red font under the wind update advanced options.
View 1 RepliesI have been unable to find anything. It's quite simple, the Remote Desktop options have both become greyed out. The 'allow remote requests' is still available. I have seen posts saying to check group policy, but I have done that and I have no group policy settings set.
View 2 RepliesIn attempting to set up Cortana, I get the requirement that location services must be turned on. That is greyed out (which makes sense on a desktop with no location capability). But it is then impossible to proceed with Cortana.
View 2 RepliesHow does one make more folders like screenshot of All apps?
View 2 RepliesI was looking to see if there is a way to add the W7 File, Edit, Tools, Help, etc. Menus to W10 Folders. I searched but found nothing at all. Maybe I am not searching correctly or calling it the correct thing.
If not, is there any way to add commands to the Quick Access Toolbar in Folders? I see you can add some limited stuff like Redo, Rename, etc. But I would like to add some basic commands like copy and paste, etc.
Whats up with the missing text labels? Sometimes its my start menu sometimes its the right click menu.
View 7 RepliesSo my C: Drive has been acting up lately, with barely enough space to stay alive. I tried to take some space off the D: Drive, which has 240 GB of unused space, and add it to the C: Drive using Disk Management. But when I shrink the D: Drive and Right Click on C: Drive the Extend Volume button is Greyed Out! I think this is happening because the Free Space is not adjacent to the C: Drive.
View 6 RepliesI have just upgraded to Win10 and most items on the "Power User Command Menu" do not work if the menu is accessed by right-clicking the Start Menu button on the Task Bar. The only items that do work are Search, Run, Shut down and Desktop. If the menu is accessed by the other means, the menu items work fine.
I've tried SFC and a day searching the web with no luck.
The computer is a Toshiba laptop running an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5500 with 4 Gb of memory. I don't know what the proper name for the "Power User Command Menu" may be, but that's the only way I've seen it referenced elsewhere.
In settings > personalization > start > Choose which folders appear on start
Can we add custom folders to this ? There are some folders which I use very frequently which aren't any of the standard folders (downloads, documents etc)
I wanted to add some programs to the top of the left side of the start menu (free space on the screenshoot). I have read about the "Pin to Start List" if you rightclick while holding shift. But this seems not to be working anymore!?!?! Is there another possibility to customize this list or to re-add the function? I don't want to use "recently added apps" or something like that ...
